Anyway, Alien Romulus. The first half of the movie was VERY good. I loved the sets. Seeing actual physical things made it seem as if I was actually watching a movie. Then you-know-who appears and what should only have been a brief cameo ends up being a horribly bad deep fake character. Why was that necessary? It also felt like the movie all of sudden realised that it hadn’t referenced enough stuff from Alien and Aliens so it threw a bucket load of member-berries at the viewer. One thing that REALLY surprised me was that after all the build-up in the first half of the film, the rest of the film was pretty damn boring. Maybe give it a rest with the films, huh? Can’t wait for the tv show! Mattthegoone
Strange Darling - fictional all over the place twisty serial killer romp, I'm a sucker for serial killer stuff so I quite enjoyed it The Substance- daycent body horror, lots to like and dislike about it, about a washed up old celebrity fitness tv star (demi moore) taking an illicit drug to create a younger better version of herself, Kermode was raving about this, I personally would have probably found this to be an absolute classic if it wasn't about a fitness trainer and it was just about a more regular ex virile raver wanting to be young again Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/75962-films-recently-watched/page/806/#findComment-2991337 Share on other sites

Silent Member
The shadow Strays (on Netflix). This is an overly long Indonesian parade of hitman related action tropes that you've seen a million times before, buuut you can also tell it was made by people who had fun, a lean budget and a real passion for delivering a shit load of squibs, creative fights, stabbings and face shootings. It's full of warts and by no means high cinema, but if you're a sicko who likes that sort of stuff it's also beautiful thing. J3FF3R00
Furiousa I had to watch this over 2 flights and one hbo sitting. Lots of small screens, but still, wasn’t too bad. I think it had some lukewarm reviews initially so I held off, but I thought it was pretty good. At the end of the day, it’s a basic revenge story but so what. It’s still a lot of eye candy and George Miller’s “pockyclips” world is always fun to spend a few hours in. The film has moments that are wildly visceral and (dare I say) artistic, but also a lot of things we’ve seen many times before. The ending also peters out a bit. Eh. My biggest gripe is that I don’t ever really like ATJ. She was good in The Menu, but that was probably because you weren’t really supposed to like her character. I was surprised that Chris Hemsworth was excellent tho. If you’re a fan of the others, this is definitely worth a watch. doof/10 prdctvsm, cebec, Hail Sagan and 1 other 4 Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Hide J3FF3R00's signature Hide all signatures 666 Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/75962-films-recently-watched/page/806/#findComment-2991431 Share on other sites

Atop
best torture gore fest film imo, why is there a remake? watched Strange Darling and did not like it. I guess the era of Tarantino nods is back. The twists were annoying. The main actress got on my nerves. That's St. Vincent's sister right? They look alike. J3FF3R00
I just watched the director’s cut of Doctor Sleep. I had seen the original version before and liked it but couldn’t really remember anything about it (maybe that’s saying something about how much I actually liked it). Having just stumbled across this “director’s cut” and being a low-level Flanagan fanboy, I dove in and was not disappointed. Not remembering much about the theatrical release, I couldn’t tell you what was different from on version to the next but I did like the director’s cut more, for sure. It took its time more with setting things up with a little more grace for what I felt to be a bigger payoff. Reveal hidden contents Spoiler alert There is obviously a very deliberate effort to connect this film to the world of the Kubrick film. In doing so (literally recreating the sets and casting lookalike actors etc), then jumping forward to the present and leaving that world far behind, it almost achieves a sense of realism that the Kubrick film was a literal past / distant memory. Then, once we return to the overlook, it all comes flooding back nicely. Whatever was changed in this cut really makes this effect much more successful. decibal cooper 1 Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Hide J3FF3R00's signature Hide all signatures 666 Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/75962-films-recently-watched/page/806/#findComment-2991659 Share on other sites
