'look back'. Im not crying there's something in my eye.

It's a short one but its nice.

the snow woman by tokuzo tanaka (1968)

released by radiance, as part of their recent daiei gothic boxset. across the three films, several of the most famous and frequently retold (in film) stories, also includes a version of 'yotsuya kaidan' by kenji misumi, and of 'botan doro' (peony lantern) as 'the bride from hades'. they all have period settings; i've yet to watch the other two films.

this benefits from a decent presentation, due to the lovely photography and sound stage set designs. the film has been quite widely seen previously, but not this nicely in the west. it's the tale of a romance between a ghost and a sculptor of buddhist statues who meet one fateful night. you might recognise the story as a segment of kobayashi's film 'kaidan'. this is a lengthier but tidy 80 minutes, and a very nice genre film.

the bride from hades by satsuo yamamoto (1968)

unknowingly visited by two ghosts during an obon festival, where the spirits of the dead are welcomed back, shinzaburo falls for oyone and they decide to marry for the duration of the festival to save themselves from their respective societal pressures to marry elsewhere. once shinzaburo realises oyone is dead, he must resist temptation and seek help to protect himself.

impressive practical and optical effects to allow the ghosts to drifts and float across the village make for the most interesting visuals. the story itself is quite light and almost comedic in tone from time to time, especially towards the end. although engaging, i didn't enjoy it as much as 'the snow woman', also from radiance's 'daiei gothic' set.

this film is like walking into a room with 8 people arguing: everyone is talking and nobody is listening to a word that has been said.

the plot is interested in the mechanics of a failing democratic society by focusing on a few key players and the events (mainly dramatic relationships) that led up to this collapse. direction seems to be minimal; many scenes appear to be improvised which at times is very awkward as the entire film wants to imply a chaotic atmosphere. unfortunately, most of the cast seem confused (what are shia labeouf and jon voight doing?) and others uncomfortable (nathalie emmanuel) and the rest have an idea in their mind on what they should be doing- and therefore going for it (adam driver and audrey plaza).

Had to see Megalopolis and judge for myself, yeah it's very bad in a lot of ways. Here's my review in the style of the film because i can't be arsed to find lucid words for my thoughts:

Sober impression of a fever dream, theatrical. Shallow in delusions of depth, uninspired in style; draws of a lottery of gimmicks, a kernel of a thought hidden in a bloated corpse floating in a lake.

you just can't handle the riches of Coppola's Emersonian mind.

Strangely, I’ve just watched Benedetta for the first time. Lesbian Christianity at its best.

yotsuya kaidan by kenji misumi (1959)

the third and final in radiance's recent 'daiei gothic' set. this story itself has been frequently retold in many variations, and originates as a kabuki play. at its heart, it's about a husband who sees opportunity in the advances of the young daughter of a wealthy man. to make way for her, his wife must be disposed of.

the subtleties in the variations on the story, the common points used or omitted (and which, by misumi in his version) are described in an interview with kiyoshi kurosawa, and this goes a long way to clarifying how this one works artistically and commercially. it's the story with the most potential, and although interesting in this variation, it's not as crafted as i'd expect, but has a fair few moments along the way.

takashi miike made 'over your dead body' in recent years, and it's about the production of a stage version of the story, but drifts between modern day and the past, then blurs the lines between the two, to modernise and create new facets of its own.

as a collection, it gets closer to what i'm looking for than i've seen in a long time. solid genre films, modestly made, but unusually well crafted.

that moment in the movie where the thing pops up on her ass is so funny. it's filmed like a cartoon.
