First movie I’ve seen where I’m pretty sure they used Ai for the visual FX. Watching this was like talking to my teenage nephew.

I doubt they did. I really liked it, but I get what puts people off it.

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

Also went to see Gladiator 2.  I went in with zero expectations fully expecting it to suck.  And I wasn't far off.  I'd give it maybe a 5/10 or 6/10 tops.

When are we going to learn as a civilization that when you create something as beautiful as Gladiator, just leave the effing shiite alone.

*the killer semi-spoilers*

i thought the killer was excellent. watched in the theater. i don't really care if a movie has a "subtext" but i will say i think this is yet another entry into fincher's cannon that seems to be a send up of masculinity. in this one the killer's whole ethos comes across as some "rise and grind" guy who's worldview is a mishmash of cherry-picked nuggets he can't even attribute properly (lol at not remembering aleister crowley). his philosophy is all about total control of the mind and body in order to put these into the service of the sole purpose of getting money, about everything else he "does not give a fuck." fincher puts this guy in a situation where he makes one single mistake and he instantly spirals into a revenge spree, all the while telling himself he denies emotion, he sticks to the plan, he does not improvise. this is classic fincher, he always seems to be undermining masculinity and its various trappings and i really enjoyed how contemporary this one is not just bc of how well fincher depicted the modern world but bc this character and his ideological trappings are such 21st century things. our society is dominated by men like these - guys who think they are stoic geniuses who hide their mediocrity with profound-sounding quotations, who are ultimately unremarkable and not even good at what they do (the killer doesn't just fuck up the assassination but also leaves his girlfriend in some beach-side hideout with no walls lmao), and who continue to justify completely contradictory behaviors with the same pseudo philosophy about how controlled they are and how they are actually sociopaths, etc.

additionally, the film just ruled. amazing editing and sound design here. fincher working with editing and sound together in new ways here imo - lots of really disorienting, even jarring shifts in the sound, where background becomes suddenly very loud orvery fast edits from one thing to the next also involve corresponding shifts in sound intensity. the whole diegetic music thing was very clever - how the music would change from in-environment to soundtrack depending on the particular shot. also the choice of the smiths i thought fit the theme i mentioned above so well and was pretty funny - the hyper stoic masculine assassin is actually motivated by emotion and is constantly listening to the most emo shit ever. definitely plan on watching again soon. the pacing was pretty aggressive so i feel like there's probably lots to see the second time around.

ultimately found it really rich and fun, a taut but not lean thriller, which sees fincher bringing a little more levity into his intense control. kinda felt there must be a little self-deprecation in this one, in a way

just came around to seeing this and while i expected to enjoy it somewhat (liking both fincher and fassbender) this one indeed turned out really good. in terms of narrative i totally loved its daring simplicity, no big reveals or twists or similar tiresome bullshit. concur sound design and -track were top notch. don't know the comics.

anyway i just wanted to add alco might really be on to something here with his analysis (didn't catch it myself while watching oc, i'm a total philistine) because all the protagonist's fake names were just characters from 70s shows n movies, clearly showing a pattern... which isn't quite as smart as the killer might wanna believe, fitting into the whole brittle masculinity thing.

yeah.

oh and i also liked dune 2. hypersolid sci-fi throughout.

I just watched Gladiator 2. Lol. What a pile of shit. Monkeys that look like they've been beamed in from another planet. A coliseum with galleons and sharks (how would that even work?). Denzil chewing up the scenery like Pacino in a toga.

What has become of the director that one gave us The Duellists, Alien and Bladerunner?

And the sad thing is, this steaming pile of crap has made so much money, we're sure to get more of this dumbed down nonsense. Worst film I've seen in ages. Utter crap.

Watching a documentary on the guy who went to the North Sentinal island to preach Christianity only to be murdered.

And you know what? What a fucking idiot. Keep your fucking socially accepted OCD also known as Christianity to yourself.  Also, he just seemed obnoxious as hell.

Late Night With The Devil

Went in with low expectations and came out of it pleasantly surprised. The premise sounds bad as it is yet another retro-revival horror film and to make it sound even worse it’s a fusion with the found footage genre as well. The acting is b level at best. The effects are dodgy. Story is dumb, etc. I can’t really pinpoint why I liked it in the same way I can’t pin down what I love about other horribly flawed and campy horror films (I.e. basket case, cemetery man, later F13 entries, cabin fever, etc.). I heard a lot of people said it got too goofy with the ending but that was my favorite part.

Conclave -

Not bad.  Liberal vs. Conservative Cardinals in their process to elect a new Pope.  I was raised Catholic and the whole thing just seems so cult-like to me these days.  Pretty incredible it has last thousands of years though with relatively the same tenants and rituals.

Yeah! Not a patch on the original.

A sequel that should never have been made.

And yeah, to think this was made by the same man that made Alien and Blade runner is just sad!

Also just a heads up to everyone in the US (and hopefully in other countries as well) Hulu is running a Black Friday promotion that is going on until December 2nd where you can buy a year long subscription for only 12 bucks (with ads of course 🙄)  There’s also a Disney +Hulu package that comes out to 3 bucks a month or whatever.

theres not a ton of great stuff but they do have Shogun, Fargo, Alien Romulus plus an Alien TV series set to premier in the summer of 2025 which will likely be entertaining to watch whether it turns out to be good or a complete gong show.

I'm going to see gladiator 2 in a couple of hours, it's been years since i been into a cinema, this better be decent
