hi, long time lurker here - I just wanted to chime in.

I really don't understand how people can act like they deserve new music from boc, or act as if boc owes something to them. By all means, critique away if you don't think this marketing campaign wasn't the best route for them, but please stop acting like shitheads regarding new music. If you're complaining now, you'll surely be complaining when they eventually release whatever it is they're promoting.

I'm ecstatic about this whole thing, and as far as I'm concerned they can take as long as they want with it. Sure, it's been a long 8 years but to be fair they could've hung it up and moved on if they wanted to. They would still be my favorite artists anyways. That being said I cannot wait to hear what they've been working on, and I love how they've reappeared after all this time.

To me, each release is it's own entity. I try not to compare albums against eachother, and I don't expect their next release to "top" the previous one. I find each album to be an experience in itself, and I don't expect this new release to be any different.

Anyways, there isn't a ton of negativity going on here but I'd hope everyone can just chill out and enjoy the ride, it probably won't happen like this again and it could very likely be the last new music boc puts out (really hope not...). Enjoy it while it lasts, enjoy the hype, and enjoy having a forum like this where you can share the experience with like minded people who share such a similar and special interest in boc.

I am not trying to slag the video and campaign btw, I'm just expressing my opinion. I've been in the marketing/advertising world for 13 years now. and to me, IMO, they lost a lot of steam starting Friday night. the video would have been cool as shit out of nowhere but broadcasting it as a projection and attracting people to a location to turn them away was silly. not to mention that code was already given and they knew it was going to air on adult swim a day later.

I know what you're saying about it losing momentum, but this was only 6 days into whatever 'this' is...so, I reckoned there was another reason they've set up that particular 'stall'.

And no one was turned away, they left of their own volition. I (probably foolishly) hung about for around an hour after that...listened to the loop some more (99802 wtf, /drunk), chatted to some folks, scooped an ale or two and smoked tabs.

(They do lock down the Truman Brewery area around 1.30-2am-ish though, so anyone trying to hang around longer than that would've been 'moved along' by the security staff.)

The only point of note I saw that night was when two guys went into the Loading Bay around 12.10am and not long after the 'csch equalizer' video appeared amidst or overlaid upon the Yermo footage, but only once. That made me think something else might happen, but no.

wow n00b orgy

thanks for setting us straight

also give mouth-to-mouth to my asshole

"Fans complained for 8 years that we weren't active enough. So here we create the most BOC experience we can for them and they still complain about the way we're going about it? Fuck it. There's no pleasing these fickle bastards."

Hello all. Been following along to a degree...

Did anybody look at the background image on their youtube page:

http://www.youtube.com/boardsofcanada

http://i2.ytimg.com/u/9D7VN2HldiRFdxFvCcyA7A/channels3_background.jpg

Whats that, a Toyota land cruiser? Is it just a stock photo or something...?

Still a bit curious about the whole "1977 snow computing amateur footage beards synthesizer" thing. Re: "snow computing"... I'm hesitant to even mention this as I'm 99% sure it's unrelated, BUT google led me to what appears to be an interesting, yet most likely fringe steganography tool called "SNOW". The tool encrypts and decrypts messages in whitespace:

http://www.darkside.com.au/snow/

http://fog.misty.com/perry/ccs/snow/snow.html

Again, it seems pretty obscure so please don't everybody go sifting through whitespace everywhere, and regardless it would require knowledge of a password...

This proves my theory that people aren't fan of art, they are fans of complaining.

Hahaha excellent! Made my night for sure. Another successful day of speculation and general confusion in the BoC subforum.

Generally speaking I am on board with the whole thing. Of course I am. BoC is my favorite band in the universe.

I just think if they're really gonna do this for 6 weeks it's gonna be emotionally exhausting for those who invest themselves in the details.

And also I am dying to hear the new/old stuff.

The video and the whole vibe of this so far makes me think that they were probably really into 'Lost' or at least the aesthetic and mythology behind it. We seem to have the whole DARPA station, grainy film, 1977, abandoned outposts thing going on.

other way round, methinks

Everybody repeat after me:

BOC are a great band.

But they are only a band.

They are about to release an album.

But it's only an album.

They are having fun with the build up to the release.

But it's only an album.

The record will be released when it's going to be released no matter how many calculations I do.

It's only an album.

This is all really interesting and fun.

But it's only an album.

BOC are a great band.

But they are only a band.

And it is only an album.

music is not 'just' music

it is not just entertainment

it is not just sound

it is ideology

it is therapy

it is many things

and it is definitely worth obsessing over

And it's not that you shouldn't vent your frustrations. Go ahead and vent. Just know that when you speak we are listening and judging every word.

True, nothing we do here is actually going to have an impact on when the album gets released. But it's a fun and interesting marketing strategy, especially coming from a band that essentially hasn't done a goddamn thing in 8 years. So may as well enjoy it while it lasts. Besides, buying into the mysticism and enigma is half the fun of being a Boards of Canada fan. Just like how being a Meshuggah fan is a lot more fun if you suspend your disbelief and don't think about how in reality they're just a bunch of middle aged Swedish math nerds.
