This isn't a bad album but I think maybe if you heard these 80's ROMpler vocal sounds first time round they hold little amazement as anything radical which I feel the publicity has gone a little overboard with tbh.

I donno why but I really love those old 80's choir sounds. I'm like a cheap whore, most tracks that have 'em I instantly fall in love with.

Can someone recommend me stuff like that, now I'm in the mood.

Check out Art of Noise

Also, avoid 80s dog barking sounds from the same legendary Fairlight synth.

Don't listen to this. I repeat. Don't. DON'T DO IT!

lol

this is art

Lol. A precursor of things to come.

I wish we all lived in an alternate universe where all tunes were inspired by this. Bark-funk, bark-hop, bark-bient.

that is a serious lol considering it's old school choir sampler patches through late 90s granular synth effects

that what i've been doing recently with some preset choir sounds from logic, I AM THE NEXT OPN

but i have been enjoying the album a lot, even all the sounds are very obvious and default what he does with them is lovely, you think it will be naff but then you realise you're loving the song/album.

"broth of protein strings" is a fantastically revolting phrase, both in an imaginative and literal sense.

Has anyone seen/hard the link from the [rather angry sounding] top comment, very OPN r+7 indeed -

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

might be getting hellz pretentious here, but the way I've been parsing the use of familiar sounds & production methods is that this album is kinda like a classical symphony for internet kids. The underlying melody is still king, but instead of relying on certain motifs or scales or instruments (which all had specific meanings back in the day), he's using midi choirs & time-stretchs & obvious pitched up samples as flourish.

To me, that's why the tracks keep mutating so abruptly. They aren't using these audio tropes to build & maintain a groove, they're telling a story.

From the Dummy mag piece:

whatever game those kids over there are playing, the ones eight feet tall with blue skin, ten limbs and magnificent crania.

This reminded me of a feeling I'd had that the hyperreal exotica in R Plus 7 may have been inspired by Avatar and what the film could represent as a cultural phenomenon.

SERIOUSLY DANIEL WTF I JUST PAID TO SEE YOU MAKE MUSIC

Thanks god it won't be in my city

R Plus Seven' is such a reinvention of the musical game that it strikes me as a world generated almost from scratch by an artificial intelligence

i can't help but feel that the guy who wrote this has an extremely low musical vocabulary and/or lack of musical historical knowledge. Just such an utterly hyperbolic thing to say about this album. If he had said that about Exai or a new AE disc I could understand a new statement like that, but jesus christ it's hard to believe that someone genuinely feels that way about this album. Beyond the aesthetic presentation, including the videos I'm not sure how this album could even remotely qualify as a game changer in terms of music alone.

all this talk in the album about how hypnogogic and 'dream like' it sounds is the way I'd describe it if i had never heard a granular effect plugin before
