okay alco

okay gmanyo

I love y'all.

but,

I posted a giant dick in this thread before

I'll do it again if I have to

like, I don't care if the fragments would be short, or long, or like whatever.

I don't even notice that they are so called 'cheesy' roland d50 presets.

like, I seriously don't even fuckin register the 'cheese'.

like, I'm beyond that, bro.

like, I just hear sounds, man.

and I, like, like them.

last post.

lol not really tho

just sharing my thoughts on the record, man. thought that was the specific purpose of the music discussion forum.

posting my thoughts on this album in the middle of the night after giving it a careful listen helps me to focus my perceptions and impressions. i'm not sure why you seem to be bothered by it in this particular thread but since you're basically a demigod i'll stop posting here.

love alco

STOP DISCUSSING MUSIC ON A MUSIC FORUM!

how many times do I have to repeat this? What you post in a thread like this should be based on the first four posts or so. If they are positive, the album is amazing. If they're negative, the album is SHIT and you should think so too.

Also does this sound like it's trying to be AFX from ten years ago? No? It's shit.

Last post, lock thread.

half a year in im still loving this album, compelling front to back.

real talk doe: read all your observations, alco, and they were really on point and relevant. Stimulating to the mind, one might say.

i just don't want you to post a penis and get banned. watmm without salvatorin is like going to a shaded grove with pan and forgetting to bring wine.

i posted a penis and i didn't get banned. i just got 2 warning points.

I listened to it for the first time this morning, first I've listened to OPN. It was...pleasant? I didn't really know what I was in for, didn't expect it to be so relaxed, low-key. Can't say much more after just one listen - I'll have to keep it in rotation.

for all of the purported slightness of the album, it's a breeze to listen to. "problem areas" is the only track i find myself skipping.

not familiar with oneopatrix potato never or any of their stuff, i bought this earlier and listened to it just a bit ago

pretty weird stuff

i liked some of what i heard, lots of it just went in one ear and out the other

didn't listen super closely. can barely remember any of it now (was hours ago)

some parts seemed fairly labyrinthine

i figure it will grow on me to some degree, but i was surprised by how unusual it is, which may or may not turn out to be a good thing (for me and my listening enjoyment)

listened to it again a bit just now and i definitely like this.

i'd give my description of it as it being like a showcasing of various textures, one after another, and with each ordered and transitioned between in ways where it comes off as compositions of different textures arranged in an order to form something that's kind of logical. so like where in a radio song you might have a verse then a chorus then bridge the verse, here you have gurgling sounds made from what sound like late 80s early 90s computer midi hardware outputs being mangled, then a sharp pad fades in, then a choppy string melody. so yeah i'd also have to mention the fact of the timbres having a lot of brightness in them, and generally a very 80s/90s computer general midi module sound to them, as being a key element.

it's pretty cool though because i like texture in sound a lot and this just seems to be like a showing off of lots of really cool textures, and has them arranged well. to me, i always think it's funny when people say that every autechre album sounds very different, because imo they don't. starting with chiastic, id say some sounds different, but overall not 'very' different. not in the scheme of things. not considering the wider range of possibilities that exist in all music. compare any ae to something like venus by squarepusher. THAT is 'very' different. the fact is that almost all ae has plenty of things about it in common (same for squarepusher and most artists though).

but this album here, r plus seven, it seems a lot like ae in some ways. some touches of psuedo randomness, possibly randomly generated patterns/textures, and the overall juxtaposition of unusual sounds with other unusual sounds. but it still manages to sound 'very' different from ae albums at the same time. i think largely because of the lack of drums/percussive things which ae rely heavily upon to create their whole sound. but even compared to oversteps which downplays the percussive stuff, this is just a lot more angular. sounds instantly stop with totally other sounding sounds starting immediately, but the flow is somehow maintained. i think there is a lot more contrast with the different elements, whereas ae tracks usually have everything mixed and produced in a way where all the elements work with each other to form a billowy musical whole, where here the elements are often working against each other to create more of an exciting conflict kind of thing. so if ae came out with this instead of OPN, i'd have finally agreed that they made an album that was in some ways 'very' different, but still like them.

being someone else's album, maybe it just goes to show that people end up working in similar ways, using similar formulas, and always getting somewhat similar results. in the ama they basically said that they've used the same max patch system but refined it bit by bit for the last few albums. maybe they could have come out with something like this, which imo is much more fresh than exai, if they scrapped their max patches and started from scratch. i'm not saying this album is better than exai, but it as i said, it's definitely more fresh. i don't care what anyone says- exai did not sound radically different from what i expected it to sound like after having heard their previous albums. i've never heard anything quite like this though.

looking forward to hearing more opn now.

Listened to Are+7 three or four times now. Zebra is my fav, but the rest is kinda so-so to me. I just don't find it crotch-grabbing like Exai was.

To keep it real and analog, I'm gonna start posting to WATMM by writing my posts in fountain pen on hemp paper, putting them in bottles, and throwing them into the ocean.
