First off, lol, of course.  Second off, I can't wait to retire and get out of this god-forsaken system.

Third, this kind of means nothing to me as my position requires me to do lab testing at least 50% of the time, if not more (half of that is "creative" lab testing, i.e., solving unique problems for which there are no current methods).  They can do all that other tracking shit to me but they have to allow for my laptop to be idle when I'm running samples in the lab so fuck 'em.

I do feel sorry for all the workers whose jobs are 100% on computers.

same, will most likely just continue getting worse. I try not to be cynical, but it seems like we are setting the stage for people to live empty lives of data entry, data entry at work from home computer job during the day and data entry into social media apps when off the clock.

I work in education and just got back into an in-person role, and I hope I can continue in this career until I am finished. Feel like things that require face-to-face interaction and interpersonal/social skills are going to be the best bet for enjoyable work and also for being more difficult to replace than jobs that require 100% computer work. Even education, though, will probably become replaced in some non-negligible way by computers, or at least it seems possible when I see things like this (more applicable to math and science education as opposed to humanities/reading/writing/critical thinking etc, but who knows):

i can't wait for the revolt when people bring lighter fluid to work and light their workstations on fire and leave.  that's how i feel just reading this screengrab.. even though i know there's all kinds of productivity bullshit in the cubicle life already...

edit: also, i use a windows laptop for work. it's got windows 10 on it and it's so fucking annoying. I didn't set it up. it was used by the person who used to do the job i have now. there's so much bullshit on it. virus scanning bullshit, auto back up bullshit, one drive bullshit... it wants to update something every other day. i ignore as much as possible but feels like it's going to lock me out at some point.. or if i try to cancel something it'll box out a bunch of data i need to have access to. i can't imagine all this + Ai trying to "help" me do shit or make choices for me.

I work for an insurance company at the moment that barely checks what you do in a day. There are no checks as to what you are doing etc. especially when working from home. Hopefully this shit'll never get implemented

This is why I am still running Win 7 on my home tower, and why I can totally understand why so many people run Linux.  I do have a Win 10 laptop that's pretty old, and whenever I restart I immediately shut down OneDrive and the computer warns me so many times that my "files won't be backed up to the cloud", like it cannot believe that I would even want to do something as crazy as quit OneDrive.  Also, my Android phone can't understand why I don't want to sync my photos to the cloud, and asks me to turn on cloud sync at least monthly.

My work laptop used to be decent with Win 10.  I mean I am sure I was being tracked to hell, but at least it was quick in the tasks I was doing.  Since the mega-company that we used to be a part of has spun us off, IT is on a budget and our new Win 11 laptops blow hard.  Super slow, zscaler can go eat a bag of dicks, and they pushed USB write restrictions onto everyone "to prevent data leakage".  I mean come on, we make face and body creams, we're not exactly protecting state secrets here.  Well you know what, assholes, I consider the data I generate in the lab to be at least partly mine and I am going to keep it whether you like it or not... Although they were constantly blocking the program I was using to sync my work files to my external drive, but I am getting around that by running a shell with admin privs (which gets logged but it's just an explorer shell) and running the sync program through there.

I have a totally offline computer for running serious work shit, that's never been connected to the internet. It's bloody annoying since I have to run shit off of external hard drives all the time, but I just don't trust any of this cloud wank in any form (including streaming), not least after working for two companies in two totally different industries that were both victims of massive Black Basta cyberattacks that crippled them for half a year. The "air gap" while not flawless offers some peace of mind

Wonder if the cloud shit might start to fall out of favour due to cybersecurity risk, which will only worsen

I wish but I kind of doubt it.  I'll bet that they make so much money during the times that they aren't being hacked to more than pay for the times that they are.

Plus, seems like they've done a good job conditioning a lot of people to rely on the cloud for lots of things.

The CEO of UnitedHealthcare, one of the US’s largest health insurers, was fatally shot in the chest on Wednesday in midtown Manhattan, police confirmed in a press conference.

who needs guillotines when we have so many guns here

(guy had a wife & kids tho so that’s sad but also fuck the private health system & everyone who profits excessively off of it: he was worth tens of millions, if not more)

Love this video really, super well spoken lady and good things to be aware of.

What we are doing now in this very moment is all that matters in the end

someone getting even w/an "evil" healthcare company??? i'm curious about the motivation for the united healthcare CEO being wacked. obviously it's a hit.. not a random thing.. masked gunman took him out w/3 shots to the chest/back. crazy. video in the tweet below in spoiler. cold blooded. that shooter is calm as can be. not his first time.

damn. could be his first time tho, people w/ experience/practice/training could surely handle themselves calmly sometimes. lots of the culture of the last ~50 years is raised on this concept of killing/shooting as a norm since they’re children, even if it’s virtually or through stories/video games/whatever. the younger generation was raised on videos just like this & all sorts of others similar. it can twist their brains to separate a murder, i’m quite sure. some of the recent ish mass shootings/livestreamed/etc instances have proven this.

edit: as much as im anti-rich/capitalism/efc. generally, murder=bad, btw. fuck the rich, but i want to see them live long healthy lives as newly poor/middle class peons.

Shooter left DNA at the scene (water bottle & candy wrapper), but without a truthful confession it's gonna be impossible to discern the right motive among all the possibilities. He's not just cool as a cucumber pulling off the hit, he's manually cycling the gun as it fails after every single shot. Possibly suppressor/gun mismatch, or if it was subsonic ammo or some exotic pistol. My money's on a home-made suppressor simply causing the cycling mechanism to fail.

Thompson was up next to testify in a big insider trading investigation, lots of competitors, lots of disgruntled people from denied claims, sky's the limit. I don't think they'll figure this out.

that pic looks like a different guy though ay? different coat.. different bag.. eyes look different too. unless he had 2 backpacks and a different jacket or something.. could be him and just camera processing/lighting or whatever but images look different.

Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, which Thursday said it would walk back changes announced this week that would charge patients for anesthesia during procedures that went longer than estimated, now redirects its own leadership page to its “about us” page. Originally that page showed leadership, including President and CEO Kim Keck, Executive Vice President and CFO Christina Fisher, and 23 more executives as of earlier this year according to archives of the page, but is now inaccessible.

@GASLIGHTER_ on X spotted other major insurers following suit. Nonprofit health insurance organization Caresource took down the individual pages for all of its executive leadership, including President and CEO Erhardt Preitauer, Executive Vice President David Williams, Executive Vice President for Markets and Products Scott Markovich, Executive Vice President for Strategy and Business Sanjoy Musunuri, CFO Larry Smart and COO Fred Schulz.
