I am now convinced that capitalism is evil

Good point.
Not impressed by his lawyer though. I think he deserves a better one. He’ll end up in jail regardless, I would assume. But there should be more to this case than just a “did he kill him?” And “did he intend to?”. ( still hoping for the second amendment argument)

Although the media currently seems to push the narrative that there is something wrong with people who think like that, he does have a point. Or, how should I put it; he pointed to an inconvenient truth.

most Americans think like that, more or less.

he certainly has a point in that 'review'...but like, that's only part of the thought process, part of the goal, part of the equation. everyone thinking like that is not seeing past it. what world/country/city/culture is being created by this when the violence is enacted? will the violence truly be the best way to achieve your goals? hard questions to know the answers to, and it's always a huge gamble to roll down that road when there's no exit from it. not saying the answer is always 'no violence ever' just...it seems there's a disconnect between the concepts & the reality for many of these people committing these acts, which is unsurprising, i'm sure.

Last night I dreamt that I was close friends with this Luigi guy. We were laughing while out and about in town, that's all I remember really. This shit's getting to my head lol

The Japanese guy that killed Abe made change happen

What change do you think happened in Japanese society because of Abe’s assassination?

worse than arming a country doing a genocide? worse than the last 100 years of atrocities? or even that last 50 years? laying waste to SE asia? i know.. it's a different thing and there's nuance and context and subtext and all the things...

there's an extra 'newsworthy' aspect of this murder for many reasons but it's hard not to think of 50 shootings in chicago over a weekend and think that constant occurrence all over america year in and year out isn't a bit more weight, morally, than one dead ceo shot on camera by a disgruntled person.  CEO assassination = sensationalism..  50,000 gun deaths a year = business as usual.  america has morals when it's convenient and many americans embrace that same thing every day. many don't and i get it.. that's what we're talking about. but this CEO murder is another in a many thousands of tiny cuts.

Each one of those things adds to the moral decay. The catharsis seen in the “celebration” of the CEO is another straw places on the camel’s back.

it’s not either/or, right - it’s cumulative.

I really hope I’m proven wrong and this event does lead to systemic change in your healthcare system, but I’m way too cynical, especially in the face of the last election results.

chengo, i kinda feel like you’re really downplaying the stakes of class warfare. you’re like walking through the halls of the white house like we’re in an episode of west wing or some shit.

i agree.. it is another straw on the camel's back. over the last several years w/all the shootings on caught on cameras.. various random person shoots random person because they felt threatened etc.. it's wild west type shit and so many people back the shooter who usually, to me, seems to be over reacting and has a head full of fear for whatever reason.  breakdown of trust between random people happens.. also, a general lack of humanity and the toxic masculinity or whatever of "you've insulted me so the only response that makes sense to me is to kill you" interactions seem to be more prevalent.. and then all the people come out of the woodwork to pick a side and quote various laws to justify it all.

i'm also quite cynical and don't expect anything positive to come from this shooting. the closest we get to that is people on all parts of political spectrum agreeing that the healthcare industry is pretty fucked up. it's the most common ground left/right people have had in a while. we'll see if it lasts.

it's interesting.. the shooter and the CEO were probably from similar backgrounds.wealthy family, well educated etc. it's not like luigi was a working class guy who got injured on the assembly line at the local ford factory... he was injured in a surfing accident in hawaii. i mean, it's still an injury and still a thing to experience and he was cast into the bureaucracy of the healthcare industry to get care so his experience there was likely like anyone else's but is he a class warrior? i think that's a stretch.

i think a big prob with this discussion is how much it's focused on one guy. yes, he did the thing but the stakes are much bigger than him.

people aren't supporting him bc they love that a rich guy with a personal grievance got mad about his hawaiian vacation, man.

yeah true.. i'm actually surprised that people are asking "why did this happen" in the press instead of just doing the usual lone wolf shooter w/a grudge thing. i have a low bar for the press and mass culture seeing a thing and wondering why it happened and what it means and maybe there's something pretty fucked up about the system we live in etc etc..

i think that's just bc an elite was killed, instead of normal people who the media don't care about lol

i think it’s part of the disbelief and/or need to obfuscate the narrative about the reality of it

I mean, we just watched an election where about half the electorate voted in a guy who would shit directly into their mouths and they would thank him.

no positive change will come of this. if anything, US health insurance companies will wait until the attention from this incident dies down and then collectively find a way to further screw us all over. a negative action always ends up eventually giving rise to further negative actions... the entire bloated for-profit healthcare system would need to go away to make any sort of positive change. "positive" of course meaning reducing or eliminating the amount of $ we all pay monthly, them paying on legit claims, better care, etc. but this pie in the sky dream will never happen because of corporate greed, lack of morals, team trump con men at the helm of the govt - title of this thread type bad guy stuff...IMO only way healthcare in this country could actually change is something like govt raising sales taxes on everything across the board to pay for it, and no one of course will buy into that. you have to take away the for-profit healthcare companies to get closer to any sort of universal model. killing CEO's is not going to make them magically go away. he was an angry delusional guy. people thinking the system will change because of this is on par with fight club duders blowing up buildings to make debt go away.

Feels like the theme of systemic malaise/class disparity from Cyberpunk 2077 has already firmly manifested irl. Just without all the cool cyber enhancements, sprawling neon lights, and high-tech guns.

Also, legacy media is a fuck
