Notice I posted this here without injecting my personal opinions on this - I wanted to spur honest discussion about this signing and music.

That being said, while I am not into this style of music and frankly wonder who at WARP would feel this fits their roster (probably the same person who signed !!!), I can't fault them for being diverse in their musical footprint.

Okay, so while there's thousands of other electronic artists that I'd no doubt rather see signed to Warp, I can at least sort of understand the appeal of this (world music rave fusion, okay whatever, fine). But those awkwardly placed cymbal hits crack me up.

Yeah yeah whatever. Just tell us when this guy's getting a subforum.

Warp should sign a potential new undiscovered Sunn O))) or Wolves in the Throne Room

it's pretty fun sounding i don't hate it but this track is waay to long and repetitive

i'm afraid i can't handle a whole album like that, we'll see

That said, i enjoy this style for a change. Should be noted that one of the ethnographic pioneers of this stuff was Mark Ernestus from Basic Channel, he seriously believed it had the missing energy of early techno.

Germans, the true ethnic music pioneers...lol. (I kid)

Actually that's a good point, there's been quite a track record of German electronic musicians exploring non-Western music to push the genres forward: Popol Vuh's use of non-European music styles, Alec Empire re-asserting breakbeats into hardcore techno, Rhythm & Sound's incorporation of dub into minimal and dub techno.

William Bennett's Cut Hands project comes to mind too:

This signing is good news to me, although I too wonder what exactly WARP's decision-making process has been, they do seem a bit behind say, Hyperdub or Planet Mu, not to mention a plethora of other niche artsy or experimental labels (or even a dance label like Night Slugs for that matter).

I bet the meeting went like this:

Steve Beckett: "Are you sure only Plaid is committed for a 2014 release?"

Intern: "Yes. RDJ won't return your emails and Flying Lotus is set with GTA royalties."

Steve Beckett: "Any more footwork artists?"

Intern: "All the good ones are signed."

Steve Beckett: "Damn. What about this 'vaporwave' thing?"

Intern: "Yeah...we would have to create an anonymous bandcamp account...that puts out cassettes."

Steve Beckett: "Oh geez. What about grime?"

Intern: "err...what about it? It's 2014."

Steve Beckett: "Well shit, I dunno, find something that reminds me of 'Bucephalus Bouncing Ball' but ethnic or foreign or or amateur or something"

Not ethnic music, ethnographic pioneer - he discovered this producer as i know and pushed those Shangaan releases on Honest Jon's. Typically it's french people, or indeed brits and germans who goes on anthopologic quests like this. So it's not about incorporating into his own music. Now he's concentrated on some Malian dance music (not electronic)

Getting easier to get signed now eh?

I guess this music just isn't for me, but man, it's weird to see what major labels sign nowadays.
