I have no idea what the colour of any of those artists skin is and I don't understand your post there or how it's relevant. =/

Also, I will stop being insulting now NOT because Joyrex asked but because I refuse to download TAPATALK FOR IPHONE and therefore typing into this thread is way too hard.

Also, Limpy actually wins for bringing !!! into the argument. In fact it would be great if we could segue now into complaining about them.

You're an interesting dude Ascdi

That's a fair point. I just wasn't sure what you were getting at about white people on an oil drum lol I thought you went crazy or something.

I personally like the style, I think it's fun. But I think this nozinja guy is not very talented (based on the tracks I've heard). They should sign Wisp for his take on the genre.

Maybe you guys are much closer listeners than me, I dunno. But like you know those Wisp tracks are deliberately done in the style of Shangaan electro, right? So like maybe give the albums a listen again?

I dunno, I know Warps thing lately is trying to be more of a major indie than a true tiny label, and they arent signing random shit like Cane anymore or anything, but shit. I dont want them to sign another soggy band either.

I was listening to 10+2 Classics the other day and like, yikes. There are WAY more classic tracks to the first ten years of Warp than the second. If you like LFO and Forgemasters and NoW and shit then like, what is closer to that right now in terms of straight-up mind-expanding weirdness? Fuckin GRAVENHURST or Shangaan electro?

Are you guys SURE, and I mean are you CERTAIN you arent reacting to this music the same way established music-scene haters reacted to LFO in whatever, 1990?

I'm relatively certain. I'm just reacting based on what I hear. I'm pretty detached from any sort of "scene" type mentality. I just think his tracks sound simplistic and a little cheap (like it is made in fruity loops or something.. just has a thin tinny quality to it).

I get your point though. I hate half of the crap warp puts out these days. I prefer nozinja to battles or gravenhurst etc etc which is pretty bad IMO.

I mean cool if you want to listen to Darkstar ZOMG DECONSTRUCT the concept of like having beats or a kind of weak goat singing Radiohead, but is that really DIFFERENT or WARP-Y?

I think the Darkstar album actually had a few decent tracks. But it's definitely not pushing any boundaries. I'm not really concerned about that though, whether it sounds like it's different or warp or it's a trend or whatever. I just like music to sound good and nozinja doesn't. I'm not going to like something just because it's different, if it sounds like shit it's probably shit.. =/

Im mainly just joking about Darkstar, I never ended up hearing that album.

If youve listened to Shangaan and decided you dont like it, totally understandable. Its bonkers and abrasive and definitely "of poor recording quality" or whatever.

It just bothers me when people knee-jerk dismiss an African artist for sounding "cheap" or "not smart enough" without giving the tunes a chance.

I mean LFO is a cheap sounding record. I Care Because You Do is in a lot of ways a cheap sounding record. Are there good and bad ways of sounding cheap? Maybe, but that makes me wonder if instead what there really are are circumstances we mythologize (British man in a bedroom) vs. circumstances we recoil from (African man in a "ramshackle" studio).

Some stuff gets a pass and some doesn't, and to me the way some of the judgments were made in this thread bothered me.

Why was Wesley Willis the reference anyway? Just wondering.

Because he's black. Either that or because his tunes sound like Casio demos.

Foil, serious question: Frequencies or Louden Up Now

You HAVE to listen to one of them all the way through. Which do you pick?

Everybody in this thread complaining about "cheap" "Casio" sounds, YOU BETTER be listening to Chinese Democracy RIGHT NOW

SO LUSH!!!

Never heard anything by !!! tbh. Are you implying that this Louden Up Now thing is on Frequencies' level? Not sure I can handle that...

When I reach that YOU HAVE TO UNDOORSTAND track I feel like the world is about to end. Pure dread.

Well, I like Frequencies so I dont even know what is real anymore.

Mainly I am just looking for some justice for those Casio demo composers. The fill-in for Samba 2 is so heavy

Yeah Frequencies is great. Only got round to hearing it moderately recently so was surprised to hear I knew so many of the tracks. Given how influential it was it's appeared on so many compilations and been remixed by practically everyone over the years it was real interesting to finally hear the classic original.

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

ascdi - I never complained about it sounding cheap, that's a red herring. My problem is that they are terrible musics. It lacks both musicianship and apart from the stock standard of it's type singing, beauty. I'm not pining for some classic age of warp either, unless you consider some of the mega-fauna that they had on their label whose names we all know. Most people miss the point whatever the era because of sounds-like syndrome, so all this mediocre dross gets a go, sells records, gets booked for shows and festivals. Here the music fits in the sounds like category in that it's as, to be kind, 'stripped back' as footwerk. .... blah, what am i going on about, you like what you like even if it's for reason that i think are more psychological than musical (heh sorree). bye thread, shame, i was going to fill you with a footwerk hate diatribe and all sorts of lovely bile.

Well..... A main point with these musics, is the context and culture from which the sonics emerge, not necessarily the music itself, per se. Unfortunately listeners have to be brought into the bigger picture by sounds with no context, but I believe the main signing choices of Warp et al, are based on signing characters, not necessarily just talent. So to critique just the sounds-- that is good for music journalism or bedroom listening sake, but to disregard the context is to not actually listen to the music with the right ears.

Okay, so I lived in Cairo, Egypt for over a year, and that place is a mix of rich people, and then totally fucking ghetto hardcore barely living type people. There are children playing football in the streets barefoot, next to massive piles of trash with tons of exposed syringes dumped by the local hospital (seriously); around them are Mercedes-Benz driving up to a tech shop to buy an iPad. In this context, there is a type of music that is looked down upon by the elite, which is basically "ghetto music", and that shit is thought of as low-class, etc. Anyway, that shit is blasted by all the random dudes on motorbikes and in taxi cabs, like "this is our music". Anyway, I was listening to that shit and totally into it, because the good stuff, is a mashup of Arabic rapping (usually hard auto-tune'd), traditional Arab music and beats, but overlaid with hip hop deep bass kicks usually half-beat. So what results, is this ancient vibe, mixed with phuture, but if you just listen to the music and judge it sonically, it comes off as some shitty pop auto-tune bullshit. BUT, if you take into account context and realize this sound is being made to represent some hyper-phuture shit that most people blasting it will never experience first hand- giving poor people a sense of modern living energy that they cannot afford- then the music becomes some IDM anthems for the proletariat or whatever. Highly recommend whilst smoking hash.

Nah, I dunno. Warp is pretty lost in general, but hopefully they one day will again focus on serving the scenes that helped create them.
