That said, i enjoy this style for a change. Should be noted that one of the ethnographic pioneers of this stuff was Mark Ernestus from Basic Channel, he seriously believed it had the missing energy of early techno.

Germans, the true ethnic music pioneers...lol. (I kid)

Actually that's a good point, there's been quite a track record of German electronic musicians exploring non-Western music to push the genres forward: Popol Vuh's use of non-European music styles, Alec Empire re-asserting breakbeats into hardcore techno, Rhythm & Sound's incorporation of dub into minimal and dub techno.

Not ethnic music, ethnographic pioneer - he discovered this producer as i know and pushed those Shangaan releases on Honest Jon's. Typically it's french people, or indeed brits and germans who goes on anthopologic quests like this. So it's not about incorporating into his own music. Now he's concentrated on some Malian dance music (not electronic)

Ah gotcha, thanks for the clarification. I look forward to checking out more of his finds.

Oh god I'm sorry but fuck this idiot.

I can think of like 5 people on this forum that deserve to be on WARP more than fucking Wesley Willis 2: Electric Boogaloo.

WelL said. But the crowd seem to be into it. Like was stated earlier in the thread, they tried to market this game (not good but african hipster juice) a few years back and it flopped so they're having another go, the crowd this time seem to be having it. Their limited experience and their large friend lists might push this a bit further this time. Sad indeed if it does get a go, because that continent holds many blessings, is bountiful with the beautiful melodies and the beats. Unfortunately you get the feeling that the type of A&R people at warp now are similar to the guy that they have at the guardian website writing on japanese culture, clueless space vampires.

South African music is beautiful. But it just feels like this guy is to South African music what the "rock 1" preset on a Casio SK-1 is to John Bonham.

I'm trying to imagine if this guy was Brazilian and was making 'Batucada Electro' and I think it would seriously be like the 'samba' preset on a little Casio.

This isn't South African music to be precise. These people are just happen to be living in Limpopo province of SA. Mozambique, Zimbabwe & Swaziland also count. In no way it should represent SA music culture.

To say this music is like some sort of preset is to seriously underestimate the idea behind it. It's a legitimate hybrid of lo-fi electronic methods (oddly up to date with footwork emerging) and traditional Shangaan music. It has roots and rules, some of which are abandoned. It's not let's put Beethoven of 4-to-the-floor. Are there any other examples of such hybrids? When there was an Ethiopean jazz by Astatke it was regarded as a big thing.

Yeah it bothers me that people associate "plastic" or "toy" sounds with the idea that the music is for or by "idiots".

I think the Shangaan Electro comp is awesome, as is the other thing Honest Jon's released which is Shangaan-like but more melancholy-sounding.

It seems quite natural to me that after the first Shangaan stuff made something of a splash other labels would come looking.

I love 'plastic' and 'toy' sounds. I just think this dude doesn't merit being on WARP.

The one has nothing to do with the other.

And I'm not saying anyone here is acting racist or anything, but it also bothers me that people write off "toy" music from a rather impoverished continent as not sounding "expensive" enough.

I know that's not exactly what anybody said, but I do think one has to question exactly why one's tastes may react so strongly to music that does not have the normal indicators of smooth pricey analogue lushness.

Again, not saying anything too pointed about that, but just consider that things could be lush or interesting in different ways.

One COULD ARGUE that it's pretty easy to connect the idea of "cheesy" to the idea of "cheap" and from there one could make a somewhat provocative argument about what it might mean to immediately dismiss new African music as sounding too "cheap" without really giving it a chance.

I'M NOT SAYING that necessarily, but the idea did occur to me.

Hilarious! You're right, let's get another PVT album or another The Hundred In The Hands album or another Gravenhurst album or better yet all 3 could remix each other on clear marble vinyl.

How WARP-y!!

Anyway I'm NOT saying you're an asshole Limpy I'm just saying sometimes I WONDER if it might be awesome if a building fell on you.

Anyway are you guys excited for new record bags designed by JIMMY EDGAR'S MOM?? I AM!! WARP!!!

Do you like !!!, Assdick? I don't, but it's probably because I hate white people.

This music sounds like shit. It's laughable.

Wisp's tracks in the same style were great though.

3. Grizzly Bear (actually I have no idea if this makes sense)

4. Coco Steel and Lovebomb (just felt like throwing this one in)

5. OMG ITS BOARDS OF CANADA
