I believe you have it wrong kaini, the reason why the chunks are a 16x16x128 is because of the falling thing you mentioned and the reason why max height is 128 is because of resource management.

that's exactly what i said. and jeb seems to have figured out some way to get around it without needing an 8-core i7 and 16 gigs of RAM.

a 16^3 or 32^3 engine would have to render less blocks at any one time if we're only talking about rendering, not falling... and only have to worry about stuff below the present chunk non-trivially in the case of something like ravines or being on top of a huge mountain. generally speaking it would make the game more efficient.

16x16x128 = 32768. current engine renders all of these and then removes blocks after based on occlusion.

in a 16^3 engine, less blocks

16^3 = 4096. again remove some with occlusion (but add some based on visibility above/below the current chunk)

in a 32^3 engine same amount, 32^3 = 32768.

it would have to render more chunks because you can see above/below you beyond the chunk you're in, but it would still be more efficient in the majority of cases.

think of it this way; assuming current max height, at ground level (64), looking at a mountain above you and for the purposes of demonstration assuming rendering just the chunk you're in using the present engine: with the current engine with 16x16x128 chunks the game renders one chunk for a total of 32768 blocks. with a 16^3 chunk it would render four chunks with a total of 16384 blocks before removing some.

fun fact: this chunk rendering system would also allow for proper three-dimensional fog as opposed to the 2d fog we have at present. and that would probably allow for some funky mods in time.

of course all of this would require a major rewrite. jeb's probably come up with a hacky kludgey thing instead.

The things I really want to see in the game (and I think most people do too) are biome specific mobs, items, ore etc. For example, you can only find a certain gem in a desert biome dungeon. The gem is used to make a bracelet or something that allows you to shoot fire.

I really want it to be a game where you need to travel miles to get something useful and rare. The journey isn't easy, so it is much more efficent and safe to travel with others on smp.

I dunno, I guess a lot of people can't be fucked to walk miles around and I don't blame them.

edit: there could also be quests where you have to reach a certain point in the map.

I wanna see skyrim in minecraft lol, basically D:

i totally agree with that, travelling for getting stuff. than would add an epic dimension. I like to see this game as a huge RPG. Imagine a server where there would be organized factions in war, with economy and stuff, and where all would be controlled by players. Minecraft has still a long way to go imo

yeah but get just one and you can get a farm going provided you're willing to idle forfuckingever in the nether.

as for the height limit, it's up in the air (lol) at the moment. jeb has however confirmed he'll provide a converter for existing maps.

I know nothing about skyrim except for memes but...

Yea there needs to be biome specific things. Not just a change of scenery. Some biomes already have specifics. So that's cool. I would like to see your "certain gem in certain biome" used, that's a cool idea. Basically there needs to be reasons to go to each biome aside from needing sand for glass or a different color wood for decorating.

I always wished mountain biomes had a rare gem hidden in the hills only above sea level.

they absolutely need to complete a proper mod API before they call it a day. that'll really open the game up.

I remember reading about boss mobs in there. And more exclusive loot.

I hate to say it but Minecraft seems to have turned itself into a game that will need occasional content updates to keep people interested.

That would actually be really cool. As for the biome-specific mobs, you should go play Terraria. It's at least 50x more fun than Minecraft.

It would be best if it hadn't. If they would announce a final update, maybe add a bug fix or two and then use their energy on something else, maybe even minecraft 2.

edit, skip upper post

sure. but think about this sort of thing being proper legit game content. same way the nice lighting engine did. combine that with a proper mod API and you'd see some incredible mods.

If I were Mojang I'd:

- start creating "DLC" which would basically be minecraft with different themes (outer space, cities) that you would have to pay a small fee for.

- take all the loot generated from this and apply it towards minecraft 2

After this I listened to geogaddi and I didn't like it, I was quite vomitting at some tracks, I realized they were too crazy for my ears, they took too much acid to play music I stupidly thought (cliché of psyché music) But I knew this album was a kind of big forest where I just wasn't able to go inside.

- lost cloud

I was in US tjis summer, and eat in KFC. FUCK That's the worst thing i've ever eaten. The flesh simply doesn't cleave to the bones. Battery ferming. And then, foie gras is banned from NY state, because it's considered as ill-treat. IT'S NOT. KFC is tourist ill-treat. YOU POISONERS! Two hours after being to KFC, i stopped in a amsih little town barf all that KFC shit out. Nice work!

So i hope this woman is not like kfc chicken, otherwise she'll be pulled to pieces.

-organized confused project
