1.2 will probably be out soonish I guess. Theres a snapshot every week which is a release of the updated minecraft jar. you just pop it in the minecraft bin folder and replace the one thats there already. Real easy.

 

Unfortunately Jeb said he won't be changing the world generation for the new map height (massive mountains etc.) You know it will happen someday though.

Jon and I have been working on a new map format for Minecraft that we’ve dubbed “Anvil” (it’s just a name). The purpose of the new format is to prepare for modding, especially to allow for more block types, but also to improve other areas of the game (such as map height). The changes are:

  • Maximum build height has been increased to 256 (was 128)
  • Empty sections of the world are not loaded into memory
  • Block ids have been increased to 4096 (was 256) by adding a 4 bit data layer (similar to how meta data is stored)
  • Block ordering have been changed from x/z/y to y/z/x in order to improve compression
  • Packets for sending chunks have been updated (a full 128-high chunk is smaller than the old format, and a chunk with lots of empty space is much smaller)
  • Biomes are saved per x/z column, which means they can be altered by tools

 

 

this is all under-the-hood stuff except for max height, but it's big news. seems like they're getting their house in order for the mod API.

all animals are getting the new AI in the new snapshot too.

You should lose oxygen if you go up too high and run for too long. Kind of like the swimming meter.

 

It'd be a pain in the ass, but it'd make mountain climbing a challenge.

If the height is going to be increase they should lower up the sea level as well. Like 128 instead of 64. And add new ores :closedeyes:

I would let it stay at 64. Thing is with vast mountain areas there's going to be a lot more room for bigger underground places anyway.

 

I'd love to see vast mountain areas.

Yeah but then they have to invent a new gem that you can only find at very high heights and that allows you to craft items as powerful as diamond ones but in another way. Another way that would bring a new combat gameplay so that the pvp gets spicier.

 

I wanna be a game designer now :nacmat:

 

also this new gem would exist only on contact with air so that you can't hide yourself when collecting it. Then it would be a real challenge to get it if there's someone else around and you would better have to carry a knockback sword to get rid of enemies easily. blabla

Whenever that is.

We'll most likely have to travel far on our map to find new chunks to generate Jungles. Not that I mind exploring.

 

 

I think we could go for another zoom map on tectonicus or whatever to find where we should be exploring.

the map won't generate jungles without koko applying a pretty simple hack that jeb has posted about.
