I've just logged into the server and you guys are right, the mobs have disappeared again. Currently the server is down due to host maintenance (I believe they're sorting out their outdated SSL certificates) but as soon as it's running again I'm going to try installing MobControl and disabling slimes, as I'm certain the problem must be due to the way mobs are spawning (which would explain why mobs were back when the server restarted and gradually have disappeared again). For the time being if anyone needs any slime balls, just request them and I'll give them to you until I work out a way to have them spawn without problems (if they're the ones causing it).

Lol, I just built a slime farm.

tbh I don't know how slimes would affect the mob spawning issue.

PS I would love some slimes.

As I understand it, because slimes spawn in a unique way compared to other mobs, if there's a large number of spawn chunks in a certain area (which the server's most active areas are) and there's a lot of empty space below layer 40 (which includes the ravines and large mines near it) it can overload the max mob spawn count, meaning abnormal amounts of slimes are spawning somewhere on the map we don't know about and therefore the server cannot spawn any overworld mobs as the map is spawning nothing but slimes. Therefore no slimes = more overworld mobs.

Take this with a pinch of salt though, I could be completely wrong with this and there maybe a completely unrelated reason behind it.

EDIT: I'll also sort you out with some slime balls when the server goes back online. Sorry I've just messed with your slime farm :/

No worries mang. I'm not too sure you're right about the spawning though, as I checked the debug screen when I was playing before and there were no underground mobs at all (no slimes or other hostile mobs)... just a few passive mobs on the surface.

Good luck though. confusing

The server is back online and I've disabled slimes for the time being. There are mobs hanging around, but it's too early to tell if this is because of the plugin or because the server was recently reset.

EDIT: Stomach I've left a chest outside the art museum for you.

just in case there wasn't enough drama already. It seems that there have been a couple cases of the nether being completely wiped. from what I can tell, some time early this week or late last week the nether was reset; some dudes like Lumpy had to rebuild but then all of a sudden the nether was Re-rereReset back to how it originally was. Understandably very frustrating for ol' Lump- not sure who else was building in the nether during this time. Anyway, it'd be great if there are no more resets. (I just finished building a blaze farm and would be sad to see it go)

PS. I'm not sure what caused this

Yeah it sucked. That's all I can say. Built multiple new nether gateways using lots of cobble and glass. Meh.

Nonetheless, I think your blaze farm is probably worth more than all the effort I put in, so I'm not asking for a new-new reset.

After this I listened to geogaddi and I didn't like it, I was quite vomitting at some tracks, I realized they were too crazy for my ears, they took too much acid to play music I stupidly thought (cliché of psyché music) But I knew this album was a kind of big forest where I just wasn't able to go inside.

And then, foie gras is banned from NY state, because it's considered as ill-treat. IT'S NOT. KFC is tourist ill-treat. YOU POISONERS! Two hours after being to KFC, i stopped in a amsih little town barf all that KFC shit out. Nice work!

Holy crap sorry, I had no idea that happened. It certainly wasn't intentional, the only thing I can think of was 1.3.2 corrupted the nether to fix the random falling bug. Had I known, I would have tried restoring a backup, which unfortunately got cleared trying to fix the mobs. If there's anyway I can make it up to you, let me know.

I haven't had a chance to play much Minecraft over the past few days, due to moving house and getting settled and all that. But I'll be heading back onto the server over the weekend to fulfil my ambition - of constructing a big red arse pissing lava through the butthole - in the gallery .

I think I've found out the reason why the server was not spawning anything. The problem was down to the host's default setting for the draw distance. Apparently, the default for this is 10, but apparently it's common for the default on server hosts to be set to 6 to stop apparent problems related to lag. However a bug can apparently appear if this is set to lower than ten (explaination pulled from this forum):

  Quote
There is a bug where mobs can load 144 blocks away and the server view distance does not change this setting, so when it is set to 7 which is 112 blocks from a player mobs all try to spawn inside non loaded chunks. When set to 10 there is 160 blocks so no mobs glitch and try and spawn in unloaded chunks.

When mobs spawn in unloaded chunks they register as there but if you load they will all despawn because of the way MC is coded. This makes it seem like there were no mobs at all.

I know I've let off false starts before so don't expect everything to be completely fixed, but since changing this mobs seem to be spawning differently and seems to make better sense then all the other leads so far. Slimes have also been enabled again, after logging in with no mobs they definitely aren't the problem.

that makes sense considering the weird issue i observed yesterday where mobs just seemed to blink out of existence.

shiiiit, check this out:

  Quote

  • Added item frames
  • Added cobblestone walls (yes, mossy too)
  • Maps now align to a grid, making it easier to create adjacent maps. Maps can also be cloned
  • Stairs now auto-arrange into corners. This is a test and may change based on feedback
  • Mobs can travel through portals
  • Leather clothes can be dyed
  • Added two new crops and associated items

Lol, my luck continues to be outstanding (though in this case, was due to my stupidity). So, I was wandering around and found a temple in the desert! I had my trusty only diamond pickaxe with me, and a bunch of supplies including ample wood and coal, and 20 obsidian to get back to civilization - although for some reason I forgot a bed (stupid mistake 1). I hid in the temple overnight, then decided to explore a bit more. I decided not to ruin my understanding of temples by reading about them beforehand (stupid mistake 2). I found a pattern in the floor of the temple, and, inspired, knocked out the blue wool, and saw far below, in an underground chamber, a bunch of chests. So I carefully dug down until I could enter the room. I saw a pressure plate on the floor, but thought what the heck, and stepped on it (stupid mistake 3)...last thing I saw was a cascade of TNT and strangely, watermelon slices (probably from my exploding corpse). I respawned way back at my island, and managed to make it back to the temple before all the items would have disappeared..but sadly the TNT had destroyed all the chests with their inventory, plus all my inventory (bye, diamond pick, obsidian, etc). Epic facepalm, BUT...

...best experience in MC in a long while!

Btw, mobs are indeed working again, thanks!

Was it painful mining it?

I used it as a hammer replacement to hammer my tent pegs into the rocky ground. afterwards the peg heads looked pretty damaged in parts. hope that answers your question.
