The grooves on certain tracks keep switching around for me each time I listen, since a lot of the rhythms have no obvious downbeat. I finally heard the groove that I think they intended for Morning Mr. Magpie on my third listen, and it suddenly went from being an interesting song to a great one. I still think I'm hearing the Little by Little rhythm as something completely different from what it's supposed to be, especially when it kicks back in for the last verse... like what my mind is considering to be the first beat of the bar is half way between two quarter notes or something. Makes for a very strange listening experience, but I like it. I wonder if they deliberately arranged the rhythms so they could be interpreted multiple ways like that. The same thing happens to me a lot when I listen to Cylob, though when it happens with his music it makes the melodies sound absolutely ridiculous. When it happens during a Radiohead song, it still ends up sounding musical.

I love it when that happens in a lot of music where the placement of the downbeat isn't obvious until the melody kicks in or something. I've never heard a track where it seemed like the composer was deliberately playing with that for the whole track though. I'd like to try doing that soon.

Give up the Ghost is my favorite at the moment. Still haven't received my Newspaper album in the mail yet. I forgot when it is supposed to ship.

Give up the Ghost was my favorite off the bat, but that may change as I get used to the rest of it.

I don't know why, but for some reason these days when a track starts off on a beat that isn't the downbeat, my mind often remains locked into whatever odd groove it starts with, even after all the other cues are there. I'll know I'm hearing it wrong, and I'll even be able to acknowledge what beat the groove is supposed to start on, but even then my mind often just refuses to make the shift. The last time I listened to Chosen Lords this happened for the majority of the album, and it was like I was hearing it all for the first time. It completely changed the nature of the music, to the point where if I didn't know i was listening to the same CD I would have assumed I was hearing remixes. Strangely enough I liked it way better... so maybe I was finally hearing it as intended and every other time I was locking into my own imagined grooves. I'm surprised this never happens when I listen to Autechre.

Nice one, I actually managed to get a copy of the 12" today but keeping it mint until I'm reunited with my turntable. Both tracks are certainly worthy of TKOL, and I think I prefer them to much on the album (although I don't want to get too carried after only one listen). The lyrics are much more what I was looking forward to. I really hope they both a get a wider CD or digital release at least, they're too good to just stay on a limited release. Come on Thom, for us who've forked out £30+ at least you can chuck these two tracks in, surely?

EDIT: Shiiiit, The Butcher is sooo fucking good.

So... where should I put those two tracks into the new album? Two tracks at the end? Somewhere in the middle perhaps would be better???

or just relegate them to my B-sides compilation?

yes.

I think they maybe sound like Thom Yorke solo tracks in the vein of Hearing Damage. Not to say I don't fucking love them though, because I do.

Fixt. And I think it's likely to remain that way. You could strip it of all the production and it would still be a great song.

^ yea when thom's voice and the horns match up perfectly near the end gives me goose bumps everytime

I really do think Feral at least could've made way for Supercollider/The Butcher, purely in terms of song quality.

listening to supercollider i cant help but be underwhelmed.

it sounds like an outtake from the eraser. to be more specific, it sounds very similar to 'analyse'.

FYI... 'The Butcher' was recorded and mixed during 'The King of Limbs' sessions, but we couldn't make it work on the album; 'Supercollider' was started during those sessions and finished off in March of this year.
