The surface noise is pretty damn loud on my copy, not a huge problem for me but could be for those audiophiles amongst us...

Aye, the B side is particularly bad on mine - I've bought second hand vinyl sounding less crackly than this ....

In fact, I've just got round to putting on a PWEI single released back in '91 that I bought at a local Oxfam shop (a UK charity/thrift store) and the sound quality (as regards surface noise) is about twice as good as this EP is. Have Skam's pressing house cocked up again ?

Glad it's not just my ears and cartridge then. I was amazed at how pristine my old vinyl copy of New Order's Low-life sounded the other week (been well-played for over 20 years), and then even more so at how it still pisses on the quality of Skull Snap. I really like the EP itself though, I was expecting to be disappointed.

OK, mine arrived today from Bleep (in the States). I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the sound quality. I think it's absolutely clear that the surface noise is intentional (listen in headphones to hear how it's mixed in). Of course, there are some stray clicks and pops here and there, but this sounds leagues better than the Trademark Ribbons of Gold mispress.

Having said that, I ripped the vinyl immediately after ripping Wildcat by Freeform, and it's clear that this more recent release is pressed a lot quieter. I wish Skam would go back to their old louder cuts. But anyway, Skull Snap sounds fine.

As insightful as ever, thanks for that ....

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

I actually quoted the wrong bit in my haste to leave for work. I was meant to quote these bits:

This may blow your mind but people don't necessarily buy vinyl to just listen to listen to tracks with crackle over the top! Vinyl can actually sound superior to CDs if pressed correctly - I'm yet to hear anything as clear and physical sounding as the Drukqs 180g pressing and not a single crackle in sight....

I'm not so sure, certainly on mine there's a wall of crackle from the lead-in to the lead-out grooves on both sides. On headphones I can identify the additional crackle on the samples used in the Seventh Stone Triangle and Seventh Ace Deuce which obviously is intentional but the consistency of the noise throughout the rest of the EP could be a pressing-problem (I think).

Got mine from Boomkat yesterday. It's so crackly it must be intentional during a couple of the tracks. Between the tracks it isn't abnormally noisy, I'd say.

Also, I got a Warp/Terrible Records poster for "Dreams come true/Can't".

Also noticed that the side with "A" etched in the runout groove has three tracks - and "B" has two - while the label has it the other way around.

Really not sure about this. It sounds really different to anything I have ever heard, sounds really unique. But I aint sure if I like it or not.

Weird one.

I agree it is a bit of an oddity, but I've taken to this a lot more easily than I did A1-D1. Then again, I've not had Skull Snap on for a few days now.

Just a reminder that Skam has nothing to do w/ this. It is on the Skull Snap label. Confusion is that it's being sold in the Skam store.

edit: and before anyone calls me out on why this is wrong...

i was talking with Andy Maddocks on October 1st about the EP, regarding the pressing.

I've only just got round to listening to this 12'' a second time and the surface noise definitely seems a lot less intrusive this time. It's still worse on side B than on A but it really seems a lot clearer now. I wonder if there was some shite stuck in the grooves that the stylus dug out on the first play through ?

Zole, intentionally dirty perhaps?

I got mine today; I did notice that the paper sleeve left quite a lot of residue on the record. I'll give it a clean before I play it, perhaps.

To me the mastering sounds like they have gone for fidelity over volume, sounds great to me, not really any surface noise but lots used in the tracks.

I wouldn't be surprised if VHS Head is involved in some of the production.

enjoying it so far.
