  • 3 weeks later...

Is this ever gonna get released?

I got an email from Bleep saying they would be getting it in last Friday and dispatching asap. Just checked my account and it still says it's on pre-order. Meh

Just got mine this morning. Cut at 45RPM so I'm expecting some 33RPM playback goodness. The surface noise is pretty damn loud on my copy, not a huge problem for me but could be for those audiophiles amongst us...

45RPM?

Lol got halfway through the first track before I realised my deck was still on 33

Aye, the B side is particularly bad on mine - I've bought second hand vinyl sounding less crackly than this ....

Liking the EP though, especially the opening tracks on each side (Seventh Stone Triangle & Seventh Ace Deuce)

EDIT: In fact, I've just got round to putting on a PWEI single released back in '91 that I bought at a local Oxfam shop (a UK charity/thrift store) and the sound quality (as regards surface noise) is about twice as good as this EP is. Have Skam's pressing house cocked up again ?

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

Remember that little story the 'chre had about listening to Nth generation tape copies, those little blurred ghosts of sound and blurred lines and inferred melodies, and then being severely disappointed with the actual recording-as-intended? It's like that, only different.

I bet it was on purpose. They wanted you to feel like you found a vintage 80's breaks record in a Bronx second-hand shop. It's like Ae have a commitment to shitty sound quality with Gescom. They didn't provide Bleep with a DAT or wav for some stuff so the MP3 you buy was mastered from vinyl :wtf:

Yeah, Tri Repetae instantly sprang to mind. You might be right about the vintage record feel too - notice how a lot of the samples used are off really crackly vinyl, you can hear the crackling fade in then disappear with the filter sweeps.

But yeah, the surface noise between tracks did make me wonder Skam's pressing house is just, frankly, shit...

This .... and this. The former doesn't bother me, but the latter just seems like the QC department over at Skam are either a little deaf or a little lazy.

I would go with lazy.

Also, didn't the delay come from the first pressing being shit? Maybe it didn't sound shit enough so they sent it to be re-pressed again.

It seems to me that they're having trouble with whoever's pressing their records. The first pressing of Trademark Ribbons of Gold was so bad that they decided to refund everybody (and from what I hear, the 2nd pressing wasn't great either). Now the new Gescom release was delayed due to pressing issues, and again the final pressing supposedly sounds bad.

This is kind of a big disappointment, since earlier Skam releases had such good quality control. My Bola albums all sound fantastic, as do the old Gescom releases, and the whole SMAK series for that matter.

Now that I think about it, when I ordered Midnight Section, I also picked up Wildcat by Freeform... the difference in pressing quality was striking. I had to turn the volume down going from Midnight Section to Wildcat because the latter was pressed so much louder. This also meant that the surface noise during quiet passages was much more evident in Midnight Section.

Skam has to get their act together here. It's great that they're back, but it'd be nicer if their quality control came back with them.
