did the octatrack have unquantized sequencing back then?  some of it sounds very free form which makes me think mpc

I believe so, although I could be wrong. I can think of some workarounds for it too. It doesn't seem like there's much unquantized material on it to me, honestly.

I thought it was MPC at first, too, but the amount of processing and modulation and the overlapping rhythms make me think it's Octatrack. Also the way everything seems to be in monophonic layers, though that can be done on the MPC too.

you have an octatrack i take it? I didn't realize that monophonic was a limitation of it. So can you do things like melodic sampling, say take a one-hit note sample and tranpose it easily to make a melody? And if you want to stack chords of something like this i guess you'd have to put it on another voice track for every note in the chord? I have a friend who said i can borrow his for a while

Yes to all the above.

You can also sample to a buffer ("track recorder") on the fly, even as part of a sequence, which can be handy, especially when you record the output of a track or the main outputs. That's nice for chords or layering. There's also a looper mode available but I haven't played with it.

This EP is crazy, though it makes me mad listening to the record cause it sounds like it's been scratched to shit but that's just how the track sounds. First track on side B sounds like a hip hop bad trip, with all the background cheering and noise, I love it

Guest bitroast

yesss.

I have mp3s from the website but they're low bitrate, then I have a recording I grabbed from soulseek but that sounds un-EQ'd and pretty average.

and then I've got the record and with a little EQ it's possible to get it sounding big and fat and pretty excellent :)

point being, if you found this release a bit flat or overlooked it, try giving it a second chance / proper listen :)

Seventh Ace Deuce is so good.

It sounds like an alien rock concert, love the "singing" and the drumrolls, especially the ending drumrolls.

This thread reminded me to play it again ;)

Might revisit this. Aside from a couple of moments it seemed to be easily the worst Gescom release. Down there with Motor.

This is a bit strange as I was thinking of this Gescom and this exact thread about 2 days before it resurfaced. 'cause I was thinking back to my darkest days of when I was in a deep hole of cocaine/alcohol induced depression, and I remember posting a very odd post on this thread. At the time when this came out I was in the eye of that shit storm. A few years on thankfully its a different story, and life is a million times better but it's a bit peculiar the way I thought of this thread as a reference point on my compass, and a day later it appears. Anyway swiftly movin' on!

No Motor is much better than this. This is A-D or whatever it's called, quality, and that ain't sayin much.

Gescom's A-D was their defining EP. It's the most most. You must have had a lapse in musical taste, or are into Black Dog and are true to your roots.

Whoa, you don't like A1-D1? Man. Just, whoa. You're missing out! But hey. I mean, insanity isn't anything to persecute someone for. :emotawesomepm9:

On the upside, you may be able to sell the Skull Snap vinyl to someone for at least what you put into it. It was a relatively small run if I remember correctly.

If A1-D1 was a single track EP consisting of just C1 it would still utterly blow Skull Snap out of the water. Even A2 (my least favourite) destroys anything on Skull Snap. Also I like A1-D1 you bastard!

To be fair Motor needs a relisten too. I listened to Skull Snap again last week and it's just not good, sadly.
