Jeez It's like people around here get mad for new music being released.

You make it sound like all new music being released is outstanding. Not everything deserves praise. People should be critical of music.

this album was a huge letdown. moments that should build to something just disappear. that erykah badu track ends with a really nice rising vocal melody that sounds like it's going to build into a song, then just ends, out of nowhere. it's one thing to play with structure, but i think flylo has serious attention deficit. album was kind of boring too.

That song Getting There was great enough to deserve being a FULL song. Not some appetizer for a meal you won't get. I like what I hear, but it wouldn't kill FlyLo to make something on the scale of a Massive Attack album, with fleshed out instrumentals, jazzy numbers, full songs with guest vocalists, etc. Imagine him doing something with the focus and expansiveness of Endtroducing... This holds infinite promise, IMO. He just has to realize it.

Cosmogramma benefited from being all ADHD, but this new one, not as much.

Has anyone entertained the idea that his albums are made for the express purpose of listening to while fucked up?

Because it certainly does work when you're blasted on some type of PEA. I seem to recall him saying in one of his most recent interviews he does a lot of hallucinogens when making and listening to these?

Be critical all you want, but consider that maybe you aren't listening to them in the frame of reference/frame of mind the artist intended.

if he can't create an album that stands on its own and doesn't require some kind of peripheral drug experience, he's a shitty musician and artist.

and cosmogramma is one of my favorites from the last five years. i stopped doing drugs years ago.

I disagree. If they were created for that purpose and he achieves what he was going for, he is successful in crafting whatever he attempted to craft. Not all music is better with drugs in my experience.

There are tons of parallels with visual art here too, some of it is simply produced with the intention of being viewed in a different state of mind. For example a lot of Joe Macgown's work, or even simple things like the cover of Hello Everything, or Calvacade of Glee and Dadaist Happy Hardcore Pom Poms.

That doesn't make the person a shitty artist. That means they are going outside of the boundaries of "normal" perception and creating something they will know have a certain effect under a different frame of mind.

I think I've played this album once all the way through so granted I haven't given it much a chance, but nothing exactly stood out for me. It just kinda felt like another addition to a longer discography than an album in itself when I listened to it, then again a similar thing happened to me with Cosmogramma so maybe things will change over time.

I've been digging the shit out of Duality though, more Captain Murphy please!

It's all good. Everyone's experiences with the senses and music is different. I'm just saying he may be trying to access a more narrow audience and I think he does what he does quite well.

And yeah Aserinsky, hes supposed to be releasing a full length captain murphy album this year!

I doubt he's trying to appeal to a narrow audience. If he was, he'd be on a much more boutique label, and would be releasing music that's more experimental as well. Granted his music is less hip hop than it used to be, but it's still easy enough to digest. I think he's trying to expand his fan base, if anything.

i listened to cosmogramma once on acid and the psychedelic experience definitely made for an enjoyable listen. the short tracks + no perception of time meant you were able to lose yourself in even the shorted 1 minute track. so um, it does make sense that the albums are probably made with drug taking in mind, but i'm not sure if that's really an excuse or a criticism or anything.

Actually, only a few. This one for example wasn't by me.

HHV Mag is a bit slow on translating their reviews (originally written in German). So I thought it was time to catch up. Sorry for the avalanche of reviews.

Funny though, my review post reanimated this long forgotten thread
