For me, and this is obviously early days, but this batch has made the first mostly redundant.  I liked the different goes through the A set in the first batch, but, especially in the first half, I never found them quite satisfying.  Now I've got Melbourne as a point of comparison, I find the earlier sets of this material sort of lack focus and restraint in almost everything above the bass region.  Lots of swirling sounds that bend this way and that and never seem to have much of a relationship with one another.  This makes it have a lot of really lovely spots, but also large periods where you just feel lost without much to hold onto.

In the sets starting at the beginning of 2023, everything feels way more precise to me.  In Melbourne a lot of the treble voices, are much more clipped and controlled, same with the mids.  More pointed.  For me it makes a much more compelling listening experience and the whole set feels like it has some sort of narrative flow that I didn't know was lacking before.  I still find the first 25 minutes of runtime, or thereabouts, to be a little diffuse, but I find it easier to grab onto compared to Turin or Bergen, and my mind doesn't drift off to other things anymore.

The set I've made so far, from the 30 minute mark onwards, through the rest of Melbourne, into Venice, which then merges into a blend of pieces from Dublin, Barcelona, Rennes and Madrid that is a work in progress, and finally merges into Lyon, is the best album they've done.  I've actually ended up doubling up a few of the bits, like section '21' first from Venice and then repeated from the Dublin set, and '36' and '38' from Lyon and Lisbon back to back, because I can't choose between them and they are distinct flavours that bear repeating.

I think Lyon is a phenomenal piece of work, but I don't think it stands head and shoulders above the rest of the sets as I've assembled them so far, and listening to the whole thing from the beginning (4 and a half hours run time) the whole thing keeps me engaged and it's constantly entertaining and stimulating.

Funny I haven't listened to any Autechre for maybe a couple of years, sometimes I purposely rest certain artists that I love to avoid burn out (I didn't listen to Master Of Puppets, Ride The Lightning, Seasons In The Abyss, South Of Heaven and Reign In Blood for almost a decade for this reason) and last week began the chronological trip through AE's back catalogue (including EPs) I'm currently up to LP5 and now I guess must take a little detour.

a decade without reign in blood? NO WAY

Hope they'll deploy Oversteps tour records or components sometime for such nerds like us (like they did with Quaristice tour components)

I know, I keep looking for a little easter egg link on their site, kinda like they did with Quarisitice. Maybe they'd throw one up, but I'd gladly pay for them

I'm still going through most of them in chronological order. Paris was fantastic. That outro is glorious, if that's what the D sets start with I'm really excited to hear how it evolves. Loved how this one ended too though. Also, the part around 38:00 is really beautiful, reminds me a lot of exai or move of ten.

just listened to Paris & it was very strong, lots of great stuff in there, some grooves reminded me of late 90s/early 00s era AE, some of Oversteps vibes, all really strong, some cool melodic shit along with the insane beatwork. great one.

I would gladly take on this burden if only these two had not sucked every verbal debris into the pneumatic vacuum, leaving me permanently mute

btw I assign the second to that maelstrom unleashed around 54

I have some albums I keep as a once or twice a year treat for fear of lessening their impact.  Scott Walker's Tilt and The Drift for example.  I mourn the day where I don't feel at least a few moments of genuine fright when hearing them.

Ok, so I turned the new material into four 'albums' and here's the work in progress if anyone wants to make it themselves or make changes.  I was using the 'song' indicator numbers on the wiki pages that have been shared around, but overnight they decided there was another song somewhere in Venice and it has messed up all of my references.  Obviously you'll need to chop at transients, because I'm not documenting milliseconds:

Set 1 -

Melbourne 00.00 - 56.01  -

Venice 10.41 - 25.54  -

Total run time: 1.11.15

Set 2 -

Venice 25.54 - 48.20  -

Dublin 4.42 - 21.50 -

Barcelona 5.01 - 23.32

Total run time: 58.05

Set 3

Rennes 22.32 - 35.33 -

Barcelona 32.18 - 40.42 -

Rennes 43.33 - 49.22 -

Barcelona 45.49 - 56.44 -

Madrid - 58.36 - 68.04 -

Lisbon 6.49 - 12.02 -

Lyon 9.18 - 13.43 -

Lisbon 16.02 - 20.17 -

Lyon 16.54 - 23.33

Total run time: 1.08.18

Set 4

Lyon 23.33 - end

Total run time 1.04.08

As a live experience I preferred Paris to Lyon, the contrast between the venue and the music, the Parisian audience going crazy (and that's pretty unusual), the fact that @Stock was here, that was top stuff.

this is a good point on the difference between the live experience & the recording...the music itself is important of course but it's surely not the only thing matters, the experience with others is key in many cases

File quality point: I always buy the highest quality 24 Bit versions, but being on a very slow download line I grabbed the mp3's for reference while waiting for the big files and was surprised at the bricking of them, not seen the WAV file yet but the Lyon mp3 file is not something I'd release to a client (I work in audio pre and post production etc.) - clipping at 2600, I just wouldn't release any file with that amount for sale, but I'm not a fan of bricking in any instance... not seen the 24Bit file yet but I can't imagine they recorded it this hot

I haven’t looked at the 24bit wavs but clipping can easily be introduced during sample rate conversion and lossless to lossy conversion, especially when you’re already running hot near 0. Lots of releases have clipped samples.  I wouldn’t be surprised if the 24bit wavs did not clip though

Wait how come the 888 would sound cleaner than just recording digital vinyls in the box? Just because it has really nice magic preamps that add some colour, or what? Or do they mix analog?
