fyi you can do View>Show Clipping in Audacity and red lines will show up if something is clipped. in case you dont already know

ae's generally been pretty loud since like elseq i think

also if you look at the entire hour+ zoomed out like that it looks a bit worse than it is imo

sure yeah, the only thing that matters is if it's staying under true clipping, and if it sounds good to your ears.

to me, they sound great.

yeah no they sound great. it's purely electronic music synthesized whole cloth by two incredibly talented producers and afaik touched by no one else so the loudness is just kind of intrinsic to it, it's not like brickwalled recorded music

Unread replies

It's the most engaging of the live releases by a country mile imo.  I've been listening for most of the days since release closely (I haven't turned on a synth since it dropped, rip) and I'm convinced that the five hours or so of material spread out over the sets is as good as anything else they've done.

so the scratching bit is not actually CDJ scratching like someone mentioned Rob was doing for that Gescom gig, right?

Expand

Yeah I really don't think it's done live in any way. That insane scratching in the Gescom AMKS set as well as in the live set section would require skills beyond human. My guess it's that it's sequenced live. Pure Data has an example patch for a sample scratcher, and it works quite well, see image. It's not a complex thing, either, and this patch has been in the help files for a very long time. And if it's possible in Pure Data, then it's also possible in Max.

The thing about this patch is that it requires active input from your side. My guess is they built a small sequencer specifically for getting the natural scratching effect, so that it spits out sweet spot values at the right moments. Getting this right would be the actual challenge in coding this.

It'd still be hilarious if they actually were sat there in the dark, sweating and scratching they're fingertips off. But the gigs are never pitch-black-i-can't-see-my-hand-before-eyes. I would definitely have noticed that during the Dublin gig.

In the Rennes set in the piece starting around the 27.30 mark, there's a really weird and funny extended section where everything gets stripped down to a couple of sounds and then grinds to a complete halt for a few second.  I was just picturing Rab and Steve smacking the side of the laptop to get it to kick in again.

What does he mean by "Unusual dash character?"

I don't understand that one..

It's called em dash. I think it's a regular key on qwerty keyboards, but other layouts often don't have it. I have to copy/paste it or use an insane shortcut everytime I am using it. There are 4 different ones that aren't the same key as minus aka "-" lol https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dash#Em_dash

Edit: Disregard. The one they're using for the naming here is actually even another one called Hyphen-Minus lmao, specifically FULLWIDTH HYPHEN-MINUS (Unicode U+FF0D)

My god! What a small thing to ask and whine about, why not just asking something more important like why Bleep is making so shitty Ae Merch..
He had the chance but blew it.

I almost believe myself when I say this but there should be individual t-shirts for every single live set with just the respective cover art on black. So far, I'd buy Dublin, Sydney, and Lyon.

I'm sorry to advise, but you're wrong on literally every thing you've said here (and I say this as an insane keyboard enthusiast).

File quality point: I always buy the highest quality 24 Bit versions, but being on a very slow download line I grabbed the mp3's for reference while waiting for the big files and was surprised at the bricking of them, not seen the WAV file yet but the Lyon mp3 file is not something I'd release to a client (I work in audio pre and post production etc.) - clipping at 2600, I just wouldn't release any file with that amount for sale, but I'm not a fan of bricking in any instance... not seen the 24Bit file yet but I can't imagine they recorded it this hot

Um.  It's not actually bricked at all.  You are looking at a wav that is over an hour long so the transients are all bunched up.  Zoom in a bit.....

clipping at 2600? Is That 26 minutes into the Lyon set?

Expand

no, it's ~2600 clipped samples, and that's only for the mp3s, again likely because of some default encoding setting. the lossless files don't clip at all (i believe)

I copy pasted that character from my folder and searched for it in unicode databases, don't know what else to tell you.
