2024 US Election

I dont want to derail the topic, so I will just make one point based on your example. The huge rise in house prices in the US over the last few years has affected existing housing, not just new builds so its not simply a supply side issue. The primary driver has been an increase in demand which is massively exacerbated by the acceleration of the financialisation of housing. This is a global phenomenon, we have the same thing in Ireland, and the same reticence to deal with the problem here, with potentially similar results electorally.

Yes that's how markets work? And existing housing is part of the supply side.

US showed reduced immigration every year from 2016 to 2022, and otherwise population growth was normal, so it's difficult to pin it on demand in the US. I'm not sure what you mean by the financialisation of housing. Do you mean the use of housing as an investment vehicle by private investors (which is what we see in Canada) or the purchase of housing by hedge funds and other institutional investors?

If the latter, well guess which party introduced a bill to ban hedge funds from owning single-family homes? (hint, it's not the one that idolizes a bronzed turd).

I wonder how his fanbase will react to this. It'll most definitely go down a route where he makes tax cuts for the elite while bleeding the general population as much as possible. I'm assuming they will just defend him with whatever reason is being spoonfed to them, seeing this election I really don't have much hope for people's critical thinking

They won't care or will blame immigrants (or some other marginalized group).

Is this the end game of US-style, wild-west capitalism?

Huge wealth gap, disillusioned populace, only demagogues can get elected?

You may remember, especially if you are female, that roe v wade was overturned thanks to trump’s appointed Supreme Court justices. That is a very big deal, among many others.

Hypothetical: If you are trying to get pregnant and succeed (congrats) but find out early on that your pregnancy has a life threatening issue and will likely die before birth (sadly not that uncommon), depending on the state you live in, you are now potentially faced with not being provided services that could ensure your health or survival.

Supreme Court appointments may be the biggest reason why trump is a horrible choice, next to the fact he is in charge of the military and has the codes.

And of course, banning abortion has led to increased pregnancy deaths - here is Texas: https://www.nbcnews.com/health/womens-health/texas-abortion-ban-deaths-pregnant-women-sb8-analysis-rcna171631

A personal story in Georgia: https://www.propublica.org/article/georgia-abortion-ban-amber-thurman-death

Another one in Texas: https://www.yahoo.com/news/texas-teen-suffering-miscarriage-dies-163055725.html

Fucking abhorrent.

Well, yes, I meant supply side costs in relation to the construction of new homes. Strong demand and the formation of new households has been recognised as a major factor in house prices in the US, which combines with the staggering rise of REITs, hedge funds etc. buying up property for rental and investment and the constraints that puts on supply.

I saw that bill when it was introduced. Shame it never happened, and now it never will.

Is there something terrible he’s going to do or/and fail to do? Im genuinely asking

he has all three branches of governments. there's no checks against his power. republicans will do every god damned dumb cruel thing they want.

- repealing ACA taking away healthcare from millions of americans including me

- repealing infrastructure bill which is a 10 year project

- repealing CHIPS act

- going hardcore drilling everywhere giving permits to fossil fuel companies to do whatever they want

- stephen miller has been saying the entire campaign that america should be for americans only and hes going to be the guy making the plan for mass deportations

- too many geopolitical things to list

- elon musk brought in to basically do to the various departments of government what he did to twitter.. firing lot's of people for no reason to 'balance the budget' because they don't understand public good and public service

- whatever petty vindictive bullshit trump wants to do to his enemies or people he perceives are his enemies

- marginalized and vulnerable people being oppressed or jailed or having rights taken away abd subjected to violence from his supporters and CHUDS

- further militarization of the police

- project 2025

- endless grift in the whitehouse now that supreme court made it legal for officials to accept "gratuities"

there's more but do i really have to regurgitate it all?

ugh. barf.

- having to listen to that pig eyed sack of shit for 4 years.

So what is the main thing Trump will be focus on right now?

Illegal immigrants and the war?

- getting rid of the legal cases that are running against him

- making more money for himself

- making sure to install as many people possible in government who are loyal to him; increasing his personal power

- and do whatever he wants without any restrictions

That doesn't add up?

Edit: That's 106% Harris voters, and apparently 11% of Trump's voters don't know why they voted.

harris loss but the popular vote isn't counted entirely yet. there's still like 7 million votes to count in california alone.
