so it's possible right? i can understand you don't want to spend 8000 hours backing everything up, but you'd be open to making it available to someone else, so that they can do it?

this one's from an italian magazine called "soundini" -- sorry for the bad translation"

In a world where home computers are becoming the norm and everyone and their grandmother creates algorythmic musical compositions in programs like Max and Facebook autechre struggle to maintain an edge by creating edgey music that not only walks the line between noise and music but takes that line, puts it through a comb filter, adds a break beat and puts it out on a little label called WARP (grizzly bear, battles, etc). i met up with rob brown, 1/3 of autechre, to talk about just what does it take to surrvive in today's economy.

please tells us all abouts Overtep, your new CD.

well, sean and i use Digital Performer for all our tracks so this time around we loaded it up with VSTs and took all these field recordings, from like, family vacations and stuff and just went super nuts mangling the samples...

mangles them how?

we used some wicked effects, like Reverse and changing the pitch. so like, the first track on the album ["Envane"] starts off with this low pitched barking sound -- that's actually a sample of a dog barking, pitched down. also reverb is on it, we LOVE reverb, especially the one's Alesis makes; he's a great reverb creator.

yes, A;esis is my brother

anyway, i do most of the computer stuff while sean booth handles the acoustic stuff and we have another dude who writes the music. we all just have a laugh, cum our pants, silk our sisters and annoint our membranes

sounds wicked

it is wicked yeah.

so, when are you going to release new albums?

probably

do you ever think of getting into producing? songs?

yes we have already done that, like, for some pretty famous people. i'm not going to name names but bustah rymes is one and j dilla, we did most of his beats. i have a new computer so i can finally expand my skills via email. hotmail is excellent for this

yes

in the past we were very competetive, usually we used our bmx bikes, screenshots from SOS magazine, old boss delay units, etc. but now that we're older there's a lot more stuff we can do, like for exampling we are too fast for our computers so everything we think about requires two computers each and brian eno

is he involved in a lot of your production?

yeah, he did several of our first albums":: "Discreet lOOPS" "Ambein" "live at Appolo" so we're indebted to him. when we first played our first video game ("little red hood") we were always already like, "yes, we've got to get into this business" and the music was a soo inspiring to me and him, sean.

what do you think of the apples ipad?

it's ace, we have got it to run max, msp, and so on. on our label, 12k, we have an album entirely done on ipad, it's called "IPOD" and it's released by Guescom -- which is us mostly.

is rob hall a dj?

totally

what's for the future?

eden. i know a lot of people are cynical because the big bosses and fat men are running the world to a halt and the ground but if you just buy the newest equipment from such sites as harmony central, best buy, eBay, etc it shouldn't be a problme. people have gotta man tracks in this age

part words?

stay healthy and give it a dick.

It might be that some of the other mods have the sql password that is needed to dump the threads out for archiving, it's a shitty job really as connecting them up to the new forum would be arduous unless you ran a 2nd new forum that was just in archive mode

Not really sure why something like this keeps getting suggested?

Joyrex has already made it clear that he doesn't want WATMM being continued in any capacity, so having the forum db imported into another separately named forum would be off the table.

Late to the party as usual, not sure how I feel about it besides admitting I'm shockingly more at ease than I expected. The purges and lore of the past seem like ages ago.

he doesn't own the forum content, though. if he wants to discontinue the WATMM name, fine. but that doesn't give him the right to just nuke 25 years worth of other peoples posts. i think having a locked WATMM archive section at the new forum would be ideal.

IMO it feels like Joyfex feels disdain for WATMM as a whole, and him being in the position of admin unfortunately puts the levers entirely in his hands. Discussing this leads nowhere at this point so we're better off (thanks to the mods) starting over than trying to keep the old WATMM around. Hosting dozens of gigs on a new forum's archive section sounds like a headache to manage anyways. Looks like some form of an archive will be managed elsewhere while "we" can tend to the garden kiosk of mischief ourselves. I think we can all agree this sucks but what can you do but look forward when you can't reason with him at all

Always was more of an xltronic guy back then, really sad to see the site go now, makes me feel even older. Thanks so much for keeping it alive for such a long time!

Confident. Cocky. Lazy. Dead.

It will be a bummer the amount of interesting stuff that will be lost, but then again all the Joyrex.com stuff is lost, plus 3 years of watmm before the board crash of 2005. Its not like we havent dealt with it before. We can rebuild.

I didn't say that. Whatever someone can do via the forum "frontend" as it were is what they are limited to.

ok. i appreciate your response and any info you can give me helps a lot ❤️

we have quite a few users ready to try their hand at creating a watmm archive. but a lot of the methods we try are bumping into errors. would it be possible for you (or maybe chaosmachine) to ease the restrictions on the server side (cloudflare etc) to make it easier to archive the site?
