I really don't know what I should expect out of squarepusher anymore. imo, every one of his albums have some outstanding tracks mixed in with a bunch of filler/crap. this sounds like more of the same - few good songs, lots of forgettable bad ideas.

man, you're fucking crazy if you think you can assume something like "oh this is his japanese influenced album. he wrote it about japan, OBVIOUSLY."

If you only you knew how much bullshit I spewed on a daily basis. Shit up to the ankles.

he has written what the album is about and what influenced it, clarifying the point to where there is no way anyone could say it is about anything else except a psychadelic rock band day dream experience........

Also this album is very emotional. Its all about his trips to Japan and what its like there for him. What he hears, what he brings back... his very own souvenirs.

Was one of his souvenirs to abandon good production/recording techniques for drums and guitar?

Its from another culture/country... of course its going to sound and stylistically be very different. Thats the fucking point.

wait how is this supposed to be a japanese themed album again? i didn't read about that anywhere.

Its not Japanese but what Tom thinks is Japanese. Its his take on their culture.

source where you read/heard this please

thanks

nevermind, just read your other response. the source = your imagination

i hate to be sound like a music critic. let me reprhase, i don't like joust a souvenir because it compiles all the elements that i didn't care for from his past two albums.

I think you basically hit the nail on the head there. Some great fucken ideas in this album... but for the most part it's like he took all the filler material from the last 3 albums and expanded upon it. Star Time and Coat Hanger, two obvious gems.

Great points people, but I think this is fun. It's a Mike & Rich or something. It's a weird CD that I will listen to and enjoy, no biggie that it's not electronic music nerdery, I'm waitin for an Ultravisitor beater too, but not now, I don't get one yet.

ultravisitor sounded like a genuine travel into what wierd music should fuckin sound like, evil, harsh, fast and dirty. only electronic music album ive ever heard that doesnt sound like a complete fucking gayfest.

, this is more gay than i can possibly begin to describe. it would take a 4dimensional diagram.

Just A Souvenir is just a poor collection of leftover tracks...

im really surprised that more people don't get this album. even some of the rock tracks really clicked for me when hearing the rest of the album. with the drums, the kicks are weak and on the whole it may not be very loud or compressed but i just can't get enough of those wet bouncy snares. listen to it in the dark on some studio phones and i dont know how you can complain. im inspired to pick up some boomers to further explore this uberjam supreme.

also i think electronic music fans are assholes and its no surprise that tom has no loyalty.

what becuase we are fans we're supposed to be all over his poop?

ZOMG! Lazerz pew pew pew!!!!11!!1!!!!1!oneone!shift+one!~!!!

It's beard/dad music. It's pretty fun.

But to everyone that loves it - put My Fucking Sound on now and skip to 5 minutes in....

no just supposed to realize that it doesnt matter if you think you could have done a better mix.

i think it really does matter and i consider myself a huge fan of his.

i find this album to be fantastically good.

nobody, that i'm aware of, has ever made anything quite like it. it's like listening to a scratched jaco pastorius cd, but in a good way.

i got really tired of the amen break wankery that he kept hashing out again and again. i think this stuff is loads better.

and it appeals to the part of my brain that likes small doses of outlandish fusion jazz like henry threadgill - but without the ensuing headache that comes from stuff that disjointed. it holds together a lot better and keeps rhythmic interest.

fuckin' a.

4 stars out of 5, so far.

c

most of the reaction towards this album are the scientifical/rationnal proof watmmers have shit tastes (& explains why they're still doing threads about nin gayness or 9/11 being made by armies of klingons).
