it's weird... some of these songs could be good in a YMO kind of way, but his drum production is so thin sounding. seems like it needs linn drum, not these live drum n bass stylings. I guess it's better than Hello Everything, but that album was just so bad. He obviously doesn't take himself/his music as seriously as he did during ultravisitor... the first track on that album alone blows this and his last album to shreds.

it's an entirely different thing. i like this one very much, and ultravisitor will always hold a VERY special place in my heart. to me, hello everything seems the one with less quality.

completely agree, i felt this way about most of his other 'live' drum stuff on older albums as well.

why does he use that piccolo snare? i actually like his drumming, but i can't stand that 311 drum sound.

yeah it gets a little tiring after a while so does the distortion he uses on his bass guitar. there is very little meat in the distorted riffs and/or drumming

Im really enjoying Coat Hanger. If all the songs sounded this hard worked on on the LP it would be fantastic. Im just really turned off by the punkish sounding songs and the solo instrument widdles, which ive counted there are 5 of so far

i respect the whole 'reprodicng the vision' thing but the music... for me it's like he took all the weak ideas from ultravisitor and hello everything and made an album out of them.

he also seems, much like afx, stuck with the same musical ideas.

ZOMG! Lazerz pew pew pew!!!!11!!1!!!!1!oneone!shift+one!~!!!

if only all the tracks had the hyper cutup switching effects processing on live bass playing like

'Coat hanger and' 'Potential Govaner'

The latter is a little bit of a difficult listen but i love the concept behind these two songs. It reminds me most of when he does good live bass playing in his live sets whilst triggering effects over it.

i think these two tracks are a refinement of what hes been attempting to do for years, but these terribly produced punk drumming driving songs on here really detract from this LP for me. The crazier /more cutup arts of Planet Gear are pretty nice, but the rest of the song has such aggravating hollow brittle production its a hard listen.

i'm going under some assumption that most of you, if not all, may be listening to the awfully transcoded rip 320 i have here.

woah woah woah woah woah woah woah woah... woah... don't bring AFX into this mess of a discussion.

Now... I do agree that his drums sound weak, but I think thats because he doesn't want to put any emphasis on them. And if your listening to the drums like you would in other SP songs, where they are the driving force, then they will seem really weak. I love the bass playing on Coat Hanger, and The cheesiness on a real woman kinda works for me. And of course the melody on Star Time 2 is out of this world. But other than these 3 tracks... I really need to listen to the album more. I kinda like it though, it grows on you.

On further listening to HE though, and then listening to this album, I really think HE sounds absolutely fucking great. And has now aged stupendously. Ultravistor is of course the fucken daddy, and a musical masterpiece. So don't compare that to these albums, which I agree sounds like he's taking a much more lighthearted, and less serious approach to music. I think in time he'll come out with another huge sprawling epic like Ultravistor, but he just isn't in the mood right now<<<(get in the fucken mood!!!)

ultravisitor is my least favorite squarepusher album, why is it so praised? i must be missing something

i like Potential Govaner. overall i think it's the lack of depth that spoils everything to the point of remaining just a souvenir, something you look at every six-months or so, and then stop for a moment just to process that rush of memories from a long-gone experience.

Ultravistor is one of his best, in my opinion. It is an amazing mix of drill, dsp, jazz, and bass/guitar playing. It seems to be all of Squarepushers strengths in a very cohesive sound.

i think thats exactly what i dont like about it, i like the more narrow themed squarepusher albums like Music for the rotted one note, Go Plastic, and Selection 16. If i were to choose 3 favorites those would be it and most if not all of those have just one but really good style. I do like all of those styles individually of his, just not presented on the same LP.

this album ..i dont want to say it... but its not quite what i expected.. i like the album, i just dont liek the idea of Squarepusher haivng it as his new album.

favourite track .. . . . . . . Star time 2

the last time SP bought me to tears with amazing music was ultravisitor. hello everything wasnt anything special...

why dosnt he release the tracks he played live with a few years ago at the eletric proms. that stuff was seriously good. it makes this album (just a souvenir) sound like a joke a bit

Well what i meant by that is that it's three albums that use the same kind of melodic phrases and chord changes. not sure what it is exactly but there are several "themes" which are all around Ultravisitor, hello everything and just a souvenir.

AFX has done the same thing, druqks, analord 10 and confederation thorugh/rushup edge share the same themes all over, but IMO afx pull it off perfectly and makes everything interesting. sp, did it great with hello everything, using these themes to create almost perfect pieces. not so much now IMO.

and the "new" stuff he brings now i don't really care much for to me it sounds like he is struggling to come up with ideas.

i hate to be sound like a music critic. let me reprhase, i don't like joust a souvenir because it compiles all the elements that i didn't care for from his past two albums.

ZOMG! Lazerz pew pew pew!!!!11!!1!!!!1!oneone!shift+one!~!!!

jesus, coat hanger is fucking incredible.

i like the way the vocoder still has an essex accent lol
