I'm hardly a closed minded nun. Remember, I'm on a fucking IDM forum.... an IDM forum.. Think about that for a second before claiming people are closed minded nuns.

Why would anyone want to read a review about any art form before ever getting the chance to experience it wholly for oneself, as it's meant to be.

^ Move aside Fantano, there's a new kid in town (literally)

Joking aside, it's great to see someone from a younger generation speak so eloquently on the subject, and not succumb to needless video edits in a vague attempt to keep the viewing audience captivated. In fact, he doesn't even clean up his mistakes, keeps it on the real for the full 12 minutes. I actually prefer that to jump cut after jump cut being slammed in my face.

Whether he was guided by a family member or clued himself on to Aphex, it doesn't matter - he's speaking genuinely as a fan of the music. It's the very antithesis of those contrived videos like 'look at the reactions of kids who are perplexed by a GameBoy', and without wishing to sound patronising, actually gives me the impression that those of a younger age actually can form clear and interesting opnions given the right soapbox to stand on.

This young chap instantly has more credibility as a reviewer for me than all the hack-job shite we've experienced over the years from various music journo outlets put together.

If he happens to pop in here: Well done fella, and keep up the great work!

I got introduced to this guy through one of Fantano's reviews actually, and was immediately impressed by his eloquence for someone so young. He likes some pretty obscure stuff (especially in extreme metal) and so it's not unlikely that he's an Aphex fan - clearly has ears for more out-there sounds.

I'm sure he did a joint review with Fantano for the new Agalloch record, and I was really impressed at how well he defended his opinions (he loved it, Fantano didn't). I haven't listened to the album but the review was interesting purely for Funtingo having to deal with his criticisms of the album being met with 'but I think that works really well and here's why...' from a guy half his age and analysing the album with an equal (if not greater) level of competency.

Anyway, what jasondonervan said - he's great. Keep it up!

heh, a carcass discography review.

that young man has a got a fine tuned ear! nice review.

I'm very impressed with how articulate and thoughtful this kid is. Normally, I can't stand watching kids talking on youtube, but this is an exception. I will definitely check out more of his reviews.

Certainly better than that needledrop guy's reviews.

That kid is awesome! So cool to hear someone his age speak intelligently about complex music made long before his time (damn, saying that makes me feel REALLY old), and appreciating it for what it is - good music - not trying to like something just because it's trendy, etc.

Also, I think the state of modern reviews can be summed up by Pitchforks 5.5 for DrukQs and perfect 10's for Kid A, OK Computer and The Bends.

I don't understand how this is possible.

Which is interesting, because I think it's fine that Yorke experiments with electronic music and nods to Aphex Twin and Autechre, it's just that I never really hear the actual magic of those artists in his music: subtle hidden timbral changes, buried melodic fragments, playing with acoustic space and sense of time.. you know, all those cool subtle details that are typically guaranteed to secure a mediocre pitchfork rating. With rare exception, my enjoyment of music is inversely proportionate to the PF rating.

New Aphex track is solid. Lots of nice sections, changes, little details here and there, enjoying it. Didn't blow my mind but who cares, just enjoyed it much, which is perfect. Stoked for the album.

I totally agree - it's almost like whenever I listen to Radiohead, I can appreciate what's going on but there's just this lack of connection to it. As you said, it imitates but almost misses the point entirely. I've never listened to one of their records and been amazed or moved, or had very much fun in the process.

Pitchfork have this annoying habit of giving hyped artists very positive or very negative reviews, and the good stuff some middle ground 6 or 7 (with very little in the review to justify the score). They're also a useless reference for discovering new music because a) the rating system is broken, and b) it's very rare that they actually give you any reference points/similar artists/a concise definition of the sound, as a foundation. Instead we're fed some pseudo-intellectually/artsy garbage which doesn't really inform at all.

rant.
