So now that all of you have gotten your first proper listen of "The Manchester track" aka minipops 67 [source field mix], what do you think of it? Granted, it's not a "new" track (Richard's been DJing the track since 2010), but did it meet your expectations? Vote!

2007 even!

At first I thought it was not as different as the live track so listening to that definitely coloured my expectations. On the 10th listen or so I'm really, really loving it. So many periods of Aphex are to be heard in this track (Analord, Tuss, Come To Daddy, SAW 85-92 even a bit).

I think it's quite a gamble to put this track out first (which is good imo), it's a really chill high quality produced track but not really what many would see as a "single".

Ah, you're right! I forgot that's where minipops came to the public's attention!

Subtle humblebrag about god knows how much earlier it was when you first heard it

the spacialization is beautiful and totally fucking with my head. for me that makes it sound really new...or like the mid 90s stuff did on mushrooms. haha.
i don't expect aphex to ever not sound like aphex. that'd be a dick thing, so i was kind of expecting it to be good, but i dunno maybe more like good tracks, but i don't find surprising, they'd go with moods and feelings, more than i find create those feelings. i mean, this feeling i get from music is pretty rare and i don't know any musician that can or has done it consistently over a long span. doing even one track like makes you fucking cool and he's done a bunch, so i don't want to sound negative, but it's been a while since i've gotten that kind of altered state feeling with his music. i mean, the old stuff made the mushrooms better - not the other way round.
with this, the way he's playing the sound in space is really.... i get like a SAW2 feeling of immersion, but also the speedy rushy thing and...really it's been a while since anything musical has surprised me and sucked me into it's world. this does. so. dunno. feels good. excited to listen to the whole thing in one go.

Surreal to be listening to this. I've listened about a dozen times, but I don't think it's really going to be on repeat for me for too long.

Nothing about the track was really that surprising or exceeding expectations. I wonder how it will sound in context of the album. I didn't like how it ended in terms of, sort of, being a single, felt like it just noodled off in the end, I guess aphex does that though. it just made me want to hear the next track. In the context of an album that will start out chill and get more and more energetic bpms, it's a nice taster and seems like an awesome way to start off an album. Maybe I just want more of that epic, longer, aphex that I find myself really connecting to.

The mastering is not what I expected. Seems compressed in a way with a sheen that wasn't there on the tuss tracks, reminds me a little of the new squarepusher sound. I think hearing the full album will be sick. I want to hear his organ music.

I'm kind of surprised by how close it is to the 2007 version in the video. Actually, I can't tell the difference. :/

That's the thing, i've heard the live version so many times that I knew 80% of this song off by heart, but it's an amazing piece of work with some of the best mixing ever.

It surprised me how clean and dry it sounds for the most part, it's really out there and bares all, it's so present that it feels quite unnerving to me still - and

the low end is amazing, i'm still trying to gauge whether the mix is too high or low end focused and it just isn't happening yet, he's nailed it.

Jesus

Edit: Listening to the 24 bit WAV now, okay this is hands down outstanding fucking work from Richard, wow

Surprised at how much it sounds like Plaid, at least melodically. If this is the worst song on the album, our brains are going to be melted.

Yeah tots got a plaid vibe. Which is tots ok because it wasn't full plaid.

Great tune, could have been longer. Kind of felt the laziness in this tune. Granted he put a lot work into mastering, etc... he just didn't do much with the composition outside of what he had done to begin with. But solid track has whet my appetite.

Reading the various track by track reviews that are popping up, I can't help but thinking this new album will be a classic. And is actually able to stand on the shoulders of the manic brilliance of Drukqs. Which is quite a challenge, imo. I mean, what kind of album could you release after Drukqs?

Everything on Minipops sounds meticulously placed. Like a lot of thought went into every twist and turn in each layer. I'm pretty sure the same holds for the entire album. This thing must have been brooding for years in the unconsciousness of gingerbeard. Carefully constructed in his sleep. Which tracks, which tempos, which styles, which sounds, which feels. He's become a musical architect.

Can't wait to hear the rest! :D

When the first beats kicked in I felt somewhat unreal and thrilled. So the whole radio play was like ''OMG this is what I've been waiting for ages''. After the play I was more like ''OK, so it was the manchester track'' and felt somewhat blank. But now I did listen to it again it was soooo good and it just comes better with each play. I guess that my radio listening experiece was interrupted by the whole idea of being finally able to hear new Aphex material that I simply couldn't concentrate on actually listening to it. So yes, it is everything I've hoped for. I'm so glad that I haven't played the manchester track to death but have purposely avoided listening to it.

'sokay. Might grow on me but don't want to wear it out until I get the full album. Was hoping something more radically different from his earlier work, I guess.

I'm loving the Jean Michel Jarre purry clicks.

Not sure about the Plaid vibes, this is Aphex in full melody mode, he's always been this rich! in melody, just check SAW 1.

what's all this shit about everything having to be "different". i think people just say that because they think that's what they're supposed to say about aphex twin. seems like the "it's not different enough" brigade don't even care whether the music is good/pleasing to their ears, they just care about some unrealistic esoteric standard based on a bullshit idea in their own heads as to what aphex is "supposed" to be. all that matters is that the music is good, which it is. i'd wager the different brigade are all trying so hard to be alternative they've completely lost sight of what music even is...real life nathan barleys if you will. anyway, fuck off.

Listened to on the way to work on headphones, still sounds awesome! Now I will (try to) refrain from listening again until the album comes out lest I ruin the song forever.

Exactly, why does it have to be different? Who says it does? I'm all up for anything that sounds like any of his old stuff and shit there's plenty of that.

And really, this track draws from loads of his past styles, one of those being that Analord funk acid.

Same here. It reminded me of "Faster (L8 Mix)", in particular, and not just because of the hard-to-discern melancholy vocals.
