'cos papa holds the keys to the big watmm filing cabinet - without them we can't just do a database migration

yeah I know - with migration I was referring to things like sub forum structure, hosting space for images, smileys, templates etc.

I would even support a subscription model if that helps

Fear ye not laddie, you’ll be able to swill beer at the keyosc. A few minor changes in the look and feel. Think of it like putting on a condom you’ve already used - familiar, comfy, not brand new, but slightly different from the original feel.

Awesome. I look forward to swilling booze at the keyosc. The condom thing is making me shiver slightly. Think I'll pass on that 😂

Guys, I'll be honest, you're not really selling it to me.  We need to jizz it up a bit to get some of those millenials to sign up.  I'm not sure a separate forum to discuss Emily in Paris is going to do it.

Once we tell them plum is on board, they'll come flocking.

Burger - not even gonna fix it

This is probably what "burger" was originally intended to mean, but I think we can all agree that it has taken on a life of its own.

I sometimes use it for the original use case, but sometimes a post just feels "burger"... meaty and juicy...  Or if I feel like the user who wrote that post deserves a nice burger for articulating something better than I could've.

I think we definitely need to keep the burger reaction just for these reasons alone.

old man mode: bah, in my day twas a type-able tag where you could construct huge monstrosities by incorrectly nesting (and sub-nesting) yer [burger] [/burger] tags.

Actually yeah, bring back the raw text editor .... none of this fancy pants visual mode formatting nonsence - If I want to embed an url I better jolly well properly work out the correct tag syntax

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

A Media Diet subforum?

I don't know how much I like the idea, I feel like fragmenting a forum too much isn't great. People favor one area over the other and it makes it quieter seeming overall IMO

Yes, but an "other media" subforum could also support more active discussions regarding specific movies/Books/video games... Rather than having to search in 800+ pages to find some discussion and opinions.

Would probably get more activity than a soccer subforum imho

it would be nice if those of those of us that are migrating to the new forum could keep our original WATMM join date & post count somehow. seeing as how this is a forced migration it would be a shame to give up that aspect of the forums history. it gives a nice indication of how long the community has been going & how long people have been contributing to it, even if the name & 'location' has changed.

Other media board could open up the option for threads about different things. A movies thread is great but it's a bit general... threads for different film series, directors, franchises, etc. would be great.

The only comparable place I have to this - a classic web 1.0 style forum that's actually still somewhat active - is Cookdandbombd, and they have subforums for TV/theatre/radio, books, music, films, games, other hobbies, politics and shitposting, as well as the main comedy chat and general bullshit boards. Not saying that we need to go to that level, but I think a board for TV/radio/films/books/games/theatre/audio drama/jigsaws would probably work and could very well open up discussion about specfic topics rather than just being megathreads that have multiple conversations and are difficult to navigate.

I agree with that, an intuitive way of organizing different artistic endeavors could help the usage. We can also take that idea as for example to separate hardware synths vs software synths on their own subforum/thread whatever, there are so many possibilities but yes, some focusing on general topics and the main ones towards music.

Edited by Diurn

Yeah, it's a case of finding things that are heavily discussed and maybe giving a bit more space and focus to them. Hardware/software will often have very different users so separate subs might not suffer; in terms of media, I'm not sure that 850+ page threads are useful in any practical sense, and can't be that good for the database either.

To put it another way: imagine a forum where all music discussion was limited to one thread.

I'm on board with this, I didn't like the new one when it was first introduced.

also, nested quotes should be brought back. the magic of the old rolling lols was having a huge quote chain.

vsnares subforum pls

in san diego i lived in this apartment with a friend and it was sort of along U shape but rectangular. in the middle was a pool and it was concrete everywhere. so in the summer the kids would go bananas and were loud af all day and the kind of screams and yells and kid fun where ya can't tell if they're having a great time or if someone just pulled their arms until the shoulder popped out of the socket. chaos. pandemonium.  amplified by concrete.

one day i'd had it and was tired after but surviving on angst so i started playing records w/the windows open. the windows face the pool. we were on the 2nd floor. i was playing loud af and mixing stuff and got to the Venetian snares moment and really cranked it until i couldn't hear the noise outside and within a few minutes the building manager was in the window yelling at me to turn it down. i felt satisfied. i can't remember which record it was but it matched the chaos outside and surpassed it and was funky as hell at the same time.

i then turned it down and closed the windows and drank a large La Fin du Monde and thus began my evening. i laughed and got drunk. i think i had a 2nd la fin du monde.  for the glory.

I’m suddenly very nervous about not being able to access a ton of invaluable aphex twin trivia / info on the new site.  If there is such stuff preserved, how accessible will it be? Or will we all just have to repopulate everything from a blank slate through oral tradition?

Re: Forum software. Please not the one like here. EDIT: OK YOU PICKED THE SAME. There's those checkboxes which define what subforums to display. It has always reset for me. Main reason why I missed out on so many threads. eg End of watmm threads.

Recognised Squarepusher Dostrotime release weeks later because of this.

I'm probably old, but I like the past phpbb forums the most.
