FUCK YOU. not including you in my next mix. I went to the movie knowing NOTHING except for the fact that it was JJ Abrams. I hadn't seen a trailer or anything, not even a poster. I went there with a friend who also knew nothing and we both enjoyed the beginning. First I was surprised that it had kids in the lead, but I quickly got used to that and thought hey, could be a cool idea. I also could identify so well with the fat director-kid cause I was just like him when I started making movies at the same age, the wannabe-perfectionism and stuff, I even was a fat fuck like him back then. It was kinda hilarious, even my friend said "that's what I imagine you were like back when you started shooting movies", and I kept smiling until that train station scene. When it became clear that they were shooting a zombie movie, I had a thought that was kinda similar to what happened later on but would have been much better - instead of the >things< (spoiler-proof) that came out of that train, I thought there'd be zombies. Real zombies that is, and that the kids would be the only ones staying behind while the city is being evacuated in order to shoot their zombie film with real zombies. So it'd be funny at first but then get out of hand once the first one of them dies for real etc. This could have been a great plot if executed well, and Abrams could even have done some scenes entirely made of Cloverfield-esque first person camera footage. Terpentintollwut
^ fail-edit: my opinion as to what REALLY ended up happening @Super 8: It was just a disappointment. The movie didn't have a clear direction, the acting of the grown up actors was all cliché and I didn't know whether it was supposed to be that way, the shocks didn't work, the laughs didn't work (they did in the first half hour, but not once the audience had been lost), and not once has the appearance of THE ARMY improved any film, period. The film just didn't know whether it wanted to be some 80's childrens film or a horror flick, so it ended up being stuck somewhere in between in the movie-limbo of irrelevance. It wasn't really bad but it was really sad, waste of potential too, hence a letdown-meltdown. In what way? Same as above I saw the fourth one recently and it was just a fucking joke. I think you have to accept you wont be watching high art. Once you get past that, a world of wonder will open before your eyes. The death scenes are just really clever and entertaining. That is the whole point of the franchise. Clever and entertaining death scenes. There is actually quite a bit of suspense too. There's this one moment where a screw falls out of a ceiling fan in a gymnasium and lands point-up on a balance beam while a gymnast is practicing her routine. The way it was shot/edited had everyone in the audience screaming and nothing bad had even happened. Aside from that kinda thing, the gore was just really well done. Nothing but fun to be had. Just don't go in there expecting to see Oscar material and you'll be good. You gotta see it IMAX 3D though. The extra $6 or whatever is totally worth it for the added sound and image quality. The opening credit sequence is fantastic, btw. Bubba69
the Mist -- 5 or 6/10 A good movie, but too many spots were just really cheesy, and the ending, while not necessarily a bad result plot-wise, was just not executed in a believable way. Reveal hidden contents The character is made out to a be a super rational and heroic type of alpha male sort of father and leader. He made all kinds of rational decisions and plans, but after they got in the car it was as if there was no plan whatsoever, just drive until you ran out of gas and hoped for the best. The line of reasoning that brought him to kill everyone right off the bat so quickly is just not believable. If he had, for example, tried to find gas from a car on the road, and let the old man in back have the gun if he didn't return, or if he had tried to find a shelter before running out of gas, I would believe it more, for some reason he was just absolutely set on driving out of the mist without any stops, which was just stupid. The fact that he didn't try or explore other options AT ALL is what makes the ending terrible. The Green Hornet (Michel Gondry) pop corn comedy comic book thing where hero is hilariously incompetent but I really think Kato should have done what I was expecting of him. Dragged on a bit towards the end, but still very interesting. 7.8/10 Yeah, that's probably what I would rate it too. I could have done with them going into more detail on a few things like: The Ummah (and how big a role each member played in production) & Q-Tip losing his huge vinyl collection. But I guess that's what the dvd is for. I read there's a whole section about Dilla that didn't make it to the screen. I Saw the Devil - 8/10 - Haven't seen a movie this disturbing in a while. This rates pretty high on the "Korean Revenge Flick" scale. It's pretty ridiculous at points but has this really creepy atmosphere that makes up for it. It's worth seeing just for Choi Min-sik's (Oh Dae-su from Oldboy) performance. He plays a completely despicable character yet you can't wait to see what he does next. Kill the Irishman - 3/10 - Supremely pedestrian mob movie. The only thing this movie did effectively is make the Cleveland, Ohio of the 1970's look like an absolute shithole. I feel there's a good film to be made in the actual story but it isn't here. It's sad when the archival footage interspersed throughout the film is more interesting than the actual film. And I still don't know why Val Kilmer is in this film. Four Lions - 8.5/10 - Laughed my ass off at this. I've heard a lot of you recommend Chris Morris' work before and this has definitely gotten me interested. Heading South - 8/10 - Found this on Netflix Instant by accident and was surprised at how good it was. It tackles race, sex and the interaction between natives and tourists in a country, with a primarily service based economy, in a way that isn't trite. Charlotte Rampling is really good in this. Rise of the Planet of the Apes - 7/10 - Pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this, although I wasn't expecting much. It was so well put together that I didn't find myself annoyed by some of the plot holes. rixxx
I want to give rise of the planet of the apes 7/10 but there was just so many terrible errors that even if this film was set in an alternate universe this shit wouldn't happen. chaosmachine
Marjoe Behind the scenes with a evangelical child preacher who grew up to be a disillusioned hippy, but still preaches to make money... Really incredible documentary. Won the 1972 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature... Quote Marjoe was a precocious child preacher with extraordinary talents, who was immensely popular in the American South. His parents earned large sums of money off him up until the point he outgrew his novelty. Marjoe rejoined the ministry as a young adult solely as a means of earning a living, and not as a believer; he spent the next several years using his fame and status as an evangelist to defraud a small fortune out of individuals both through tent revivals and televangelism. Eventually, Gortner suffered a crisis of conscience and decided to renounce his ways, offering the documentary film crew unrestricted access to him during his final revival tour. The film contains scenes from genuine revival meetings showing Gortner preaching and praying for people, interspersed with footage of Gortner admitting on camera that he was a non-believer and revealing the tactics used by himself and other evangelists to manipulate people. I think Buñuel was a communist at the time so this can't really be a complete joke as the text at the end makes it quite serious and poignant.. man, what a director.
