it does fill one with a special kind of despair (which is always hanging in a mist-like state in the air, usually so diluted as not to be noticed) when your mate has bad taste in art/music. when their idea of beauty and revelation is jack johnson crooning or whatever currently-popular iteration of "your body is a wonderland" etc etc.

Why is it SOOOOO important to have a girlfriend that likes Autechre?

My GF likes some proper shit music, and she thinks the same about my tastes.

HOWEVER, we go to concerts together, sometimes its great....othertimes not so great.

We have been together for nine years, and what we share everyday is far more important than liking the same music.

GROW UP CHILDREN!

Just to add to the discussion, I feel it's important to find a significant other who has similar musical tastes as me. I mean, for some people it might not be as big of a deal, but music is my life! Especially when you listen to something as potentially jarring/annoying as Autechre, it's important to find someone who can at least handle it, if not someone who thoroughly enjoys it. I don't wanna be listening to some Ae vinyl over a glass of whiskey in 20 years to have my future wife come storming into the room and say something like "WILL YOU TURN THAT SHIT OFF PLEASE????!!!!!"

I would show her no playlist... I would just say..."look, girl, here are some cds..., this is some hip hop I like to listen to..."

you'd have to start with something approachable yet challenging, but not too challenging. it's like you have to train your brain on how to notice details (other than the usual vocals and rock set up) with this type of music. Amber would be a good album, i think.

So, old topic and all that, but I've been introducing my girlfriend to Autechre recently.

She's already well primed with melodic electronica. Bola, Plaid, Ochre etc. She'd heard me listening to Untilted one time, and the abrassiveness of it scraed her away. So I gave her a few CD's to change her mind.

- Incunabula

- Amber

- Tri Rep

- Garbage EP

So far, so good! If we didn't have some shared musical taste I don't think the relationship would work. Music is too big a part of my life to compromise.

this thread is sexist :cerious:

i also don't think there's anything wrong with wanting a partner that appreciates the same music as you. there are few things better than putting on an album you both adore and getting sexy to it.

I don't think it's unreasonable to concluded that the majority of Autechre fans are male. Of course there are female fans, but the concert I went to was probably a 70/30 spilt at best.

Compare that to, say, the Lamb concert I went to where it was 70/30 in favour of women. I someone said that Lamb appealed to women more than men I'd shrug and say "hmmm... maybe you're right".

Also, mutually shared great music sex is the best sex!

A passing mention of Autechre in conversation is shown to dramatically decrease the female sex drive and your chances of a second date.

I kid, I kid.

best you can do is get her to kind of recognize one of the songs she finds mildly catchy ["Slip"] when you put it on and then guess that it's the guy who wrote "Flim" or something
