Flying Lotus was pretty entertaining when I saw him live in September 2010. He had a drummer and Thundercat on bass, so that helped. The sound was a bit of a mess for a good 1/3 of the show and I couldn't really wrap my head around it, then it finally came together and was great.

Lorn on the other hand, who was one of the openers, was one of the most boring live electronic shows ever. Good music but what a boring stage presence.

again, i don't really hate skrillex as much as i hate the people that think that sort of music has any sort of integrity. i try to be open minded, and a lot of the time i employ a "well, each to his/her own" attitude towards personal preferences such as music taste and who knows, maybe it is original in its own way, sorta like a drawing by an autistic kid.

why what does he do so bad in the live setting?

I was bought up on a diet of metal, punk, alternative etc. I guess when you see Butthole Surfers, Slayer, System of a Down, Pixies, Motorhead, Bad Religion (okay enough name dropping, and enough of the life stories) and then go watch a bloke dancing behind a computer it's very, very shit.

LOL Irl facepalm so hard I smashed my unexistent glasses

Yeah I saw him in 2010 as well, at his official SXSW performance in March, and I really enjoyed it. But he was quite pumped, the audience was excited (Hudmo and Eskmo opened with decent sets), there were cool visuals, and his set list seemed cohesive and planned out fairly well. It was more of DJ mix I suppose, with his own music heavily featured. It was indoors too, in a nice venue, and I'm sure that helped. Aphex sets always seem great as well, but he's the complete opposite on stage - mellow as fuck really - but the music and visuals are so great it doesn't matter. I guess Lorn was just too stiff?

I've been fortunate to have never been to a quintessential lameass laptop "performance" but I believe it. I believe Beerwolf, even that Detroit clips seems a bit underwhelming compared to the set I saw.

So much examples to contradict that statement, almost all of them....

Yeah usally aphex is mellow and shit, from what I've seen on youtube (never attended live) I'd like to witness one day something as awesome as this:

Maybe preaching to the choir here but he's got a bunch of unreleased tracks up on his soundcloud page - soundcloud.com/flyinglotus - most of which are pretty damn awesome (especially the bilal, stereolab, oizo, massive attack, long lost, and burial remixes)

plenty to whet your whistle whilst waiting for the new album to drop

I've seen Lorn and I've always thought of him as someone who does it right. Sure, he's behind the laptop just bobbing away but the succession of which he throws beats together quickly is far more engaging than other's I've seen.

I guess my thinking behind it is that being a "show-y" performer isn't always appropriate, and when you're a beatmaker and you're playing small venues and you pretend you are a rock star it can come off as a bit silly, especially if you play to an audience that will actually realise when you are doing nothing musically. Not saying that its bad to be engaging, but seeing producers add live drums and guitars and so forth when they totally don't suit the music is my pet hate. Or have one giant synth onstage that they play for approx. 3 seconds of their set.

After debuting

last month, Flying Lotus performed even more new material at Sónar São Paulo, as Complex notes. Watch video of his set, via Sónar São Paulo's YouTube page.

During the performance, he mentions that his full-length followup to 2010's Cosmogramma, which is titled Until the Quiet Comes, will be out in October (as opposed to the June release date he suggested earlier this year). He also incorporated the Beastie Boys' "Intergalactic" into his set at the 11:40 point in tribute to MCA.

his full-length followup to 2010's Cosmogramma,

I like the words "full-length followup", sounds promising.. I really enjoyed cosmogramma I hope he doesn't deviate from that schema too much.

I consider myself quite a fan of FlyLo, and as much as I did love Cosmogramma, I'd like to hear him do something a little different. Perhaps a little less Thundercat (no qualms against him, but he's got his own thing going now). It'd be nice to hear FlyLo do something new, or kinda go back to the LA-era sound just a bit.

Probably ;)

I actually hope this is in the same vein as cosmogramma though. I enjoyed it multitudes more than FlyLo's other work...

The less Thom Yorke the better.

I agree. I think really Thom just puts his name on it to get FlyLo more exposure, nothing else.
