UK GOLD would make endless crappy arcade ports for.

And it's the same game - sounds like they edited out the more suggestive stuff in some of the levels for the UK audience.

Hah - was it really called UK Gold in America ?! Over here it was known as US Gold:

Yeah the UK censors were notorious for censorship of anything Nintendo based back in the day.

EDIT: Although saying that the US didn't really get off lightly either - http://www.gamesradar.com/f/nintendo-banned-in-the-usa/a-20090722105344976067

No, that was just an old man's memory failing him - it was US Gold, not UK Gold (and thank God they didn't have any distribution in the US as far as I am aware). I played a lot of their crappy ports on my Atari 1040STe... *shudder*

Well, I'll play the devil's advocate for once. I don't have issues with the DRM system Steam uses, in fact I think it improved the situation. Before we had Steam there was the ridiculous issue of replacing game disks if you wanted to play another game (or installing often buggy no-cd cracks.) This was also the age of aggressive DRM software like SecuROM, Starforce & co that had the guts to fuck with your drivers.

Afaik you only need your internet connection at the first activation (to link the CD-key with your account.) After that you can play offline if there's no internet connection available. You can install the game on as many systems you want, no need for switching CD's, no shitty/buggy DRM attempts by other companies etc.

Ah, interesting - I didn't know the UK had the NES... thought they started off with the Super NES/Super Famicom and before that had Spectrums and other consoles that UK GOLD would make endless crappy arcade ports for.

yeah we had the NES, and the Master System, and Atari 2600, and various other consoles. i don't think we got anything like the ColecoVision, which seems to be very America-centric? i dunno. i've only ever heard of those being in relation to the US.

we even had the Sega Genesis under it's proper name (Mega Drive) :emotawesomepm9:

I'll say, just look at the difference between Vegas Girl and the girl in my avatar!

Still, I like the European version. Look at her, rocking her head.

We've also got McDonalds, Nike, Starbucks, cars, fire, the wheel, oxygen. We're almost a proper country.

I'VE DONE IT - I'VE FUCKING COMPLETED PARODIUS WITHOUT SAVESTATES111111!!

There's a brief section just before the final boss which took over an hour of repetitive death to complete. And the final boss turned out to be, in the true spirit of parody, no challenge at all. It may have been A Winner Is You, but the ending was a rush after going through so much to achieve it. I've loved this game for so long, and now I feel as though I have something to show for it

Currently (well not this very second as I'm at work) playing through the semi-old skool Painkiller. It's a great hybrid between the dark atmosphere of the original Quake and the over-the-top-ness of Serious Sam. Available for only $2.49 (and why I ended up purchasing it) here - http://www.gog.com/en/newsletter/promo_jowood_week_special

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

ahh i've got that on my wantlist on Steam...sounds good!

Yeah the whole Gog service seems pretty great too - You get completely DRM removed versions of the game at silly prices like the above. I'd never heard of them before someone linked to the site on another forum.

Yes, and I hated the fact the Master System/SEGA got a lot more love in Europe than in the US... it was far superior to the NES, but SEGA priced it out of the market.

And I was hard-core enough to have a Genesis AND a Mega Drive (Japanese) to play the imports at the time!

diablo 2 (i know, I'm behind on a lot of stuff), also been replaying half-life 2 and bioshock(on hard this time).

I've also been playing a lot of Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup: http://crawl.develz.org/wordpress/ which is basically the most popular rogue-like right now, really really fun, and being actively developed. The game has an insane amount of race/class combos, on top of which you can also worship between a choice of 17 gods, each of which reward you for different types of play and give you special abilities. It has a really unique design which really takes the gimmicky stuff out of play and boils things down to the action and the choices you make. If you have played nethack, you will notice some things, firstly, most things you can just identify by using them, in the beginnning, you can pretty much read scrolls to test them, and not worry about their effects. I would say the item and map generation is closer to torchlight or diablo 2 than in nethack, except you don't need to use up id scrolls on special items. If you see, a "glowing" or "embroidered" robe on the ground, put it on, then it probably is enchanted in some way or has some resistance built in, if you see a "smoking" or "shimmering" weapon, it is probably an artifact, which are really rare, but also have randomly generated traits. Right now I am playing as a sludge elf necromancer who worships sif muna(who rewards spellcasters). Necromancers are fun because I can revive my enemies and turn them into my undead slaves. Anyways, the game is cool because it basically boils everything down to combat and choices, you can just press 'o' and the character will auto-explore and pick up scrolls, potions, and gold automatically, alert you when you find armor or weapons that may be of interest. Also, it's easy to play without spoilers.

So much easier to play than nethack. In nethack, every little action needs to be taken seriously, you need to write notes on items and the whole identification game that comes with it. In DCSS you don't have to think about those things. Still, in tradition, if you die, you die, if you do something stupid, you can't take it back. I haven't beaten it yet, and I've beaten nethack 3 times in my last 4 games, so not THAT easy, but starting out, it is much easier compared to nethack. Anyone else here play rogue-likes? Here's the wiki for DCSS: http://crawl.chaosforge.org/index.php?title=CrawlWiki

sim city 4. slick game but i think it's a little more addicting than it is fun sometimes. you'll want to keep at it just for the sake of it because you've made towns relying on other towns, and so on. but such is the nature of sim games i suppose, they're certainly good ways to kill time.
