Some tracks were pretty great, some reminded me of Prefuse 73's more boring stuff. It mostly made me want to go listen to some jazz. Hopefully it's a grower. It's frustrating to hear an album by one of your favorite artists and you secretly hope the leak is a fake because you know they are capable of much better. Happened with King of Limbs too in a big way.

But I'll listen many more times to be sure.

In the court of public opinion. I've tried listening to this again a few times, always kind of bores me. I mean, it's nice in some ways. For the most part I end up feeling like I could be listening to something else that does the same thing better... my avatar is one example. I think this music attempts to do the same thing that much ambient techno style things do... but kind of just comes off as being a bit thin for long stretches. To me at least.

again, i don't really hate skrillex as much as i hate the people that think that sort of music has any sort of integrity. i try to be open minded, and a lot of the time i employ a "well, each to his/her own" attitude towards personal preferences such as music taste and who knows, maybe it is original in its own way, sorta like a drawing by an autistic kid.

I found that album very very good, I mean a lot better than Cosmogramma. Mostly because I think it's better produced, it's way less head-aching, way more groovy. The voices are powerful, the bass much more "precise" (it doesn't sound like Thundercat wankering anymore), the influences much more diverse.

Can't wait for monday

(Plus me Yesterday//Corded is a killer.)

Rather liking this, may have to purchase the vinyl...

...and is that a broadcast sample on 'only if you wanna'? Sounds very like 'dead the long year'.

Goddammit Warp, just fucking release the digital download or something. Yet another album available to stream at least a week in advance of the expected release date. All this does is make us listen to an inferior quality version of the album or push us to download illegally in order to hear a better quality.

Fuck streams - release the damn music.

Just listened on NPR.

It is close to what I was expecting, a similar Cosmo album that's easy on the ears. There were a few parts where I was "oh yeah..." but then it doesn't last. Seemed like the most enjoyable parts ended or transitioned very quickly.

That was first listen and I will buy this, but I hope it does get better each listen.

Heave(n) > Tiny Tortures > All the Secrets is a fucking incredible series of tracks. Im sippin a cup of coffee to this record (my drug of choice these days.. I can only imaging how this album sounds after some greens, but Im traveling) and the subtleties really shine.

Agree - listening to the full-length stream at work and that set of tracks is really grabbing my attention - I could tell which ones they were before glancing at the setlist based on your mention.

Insignificant conclusion of mine:

Flylo's use of Yorke's vocals is to wonky as RDJ's use of a GX-1 is to braindance. They are sonic observations that demand more attention than actually warranted.

I just listened to it on NPR. First impressions: Not bad, seems less ADD than Cosmogramma and not as boring as some comments might have lead me to believe. That said, I didn't find it fresh and new either, so it sounded pretty much like I expected it to sound. I think there was far more development in sound from 1983 to Los Angeles to Cosmogramma than there is from Cosmogramma to this one. Also, I didn't pay attention to the track names while listening but I didn't notice any Thom Yorke.

Very much in agreement here. Full disclosure, Cosmogramma has been my favorite work of his to date - I'm sure I'm not alone here, but where its detractors find it to be scatterbrained I hear beautifully controlled chaos.

That said, after 5 or 6 listens to the new album, I've arrived at the opinion that it's basically a Cosmogramma Lite, for better and worse.

Pros:

  • sounds quintessentially like Flying Lotus, as if the album subtitle should be "flying lotus plays in the style of flying lotus." Won't be mistaken for a release by any of the biters (if they exist) or from any of his brianfeeder contemporaries.
  • very chill, works well in both background and upfront listening environments. Mood also fits well with an autumn release.
  • (continued) great use of vocals, he's got a true knack for melding them with their underlying compositions. Couldn't find Thom Yorke if I had a map though.

Cons:

  • doesn't show anything artistically that he hasn't shown already.
  • some tracks are clear retreads and giveaways to the fact that this is more of a patched together release than a fully realized statement. Sultan's Request appeared on the 2009 GLK "decade of flying lotus" mix, so it's obviously been in his bag for a while (Dream to Me is also suspiciously reminiscent of material from the same mix). Heave(n), as nice as it is, has all the markings of his LA-period w-word productions. DMT Song sounds pretty much straight off Thundercat's solo joint (again, not necessarily a bad thing) and bizarrely includes "Pattern Grid World" as a lyric. And me Yesterday//Corded tries to wrap up the album with almost the exact same grandiosity that Galaxy in Janaki did on Cosmogramma.
  • could use less jazz guitar noodling, but that's probably just a matter personal taste.

that's really sad but you're right. Nothing really new in that album but I love it anyway !
